The Prime Minister appointed the South African General Jan Christian Smuts to head a committee on 'Air Organisation and Home Defence Against Air Raids' meanhwile Major General Trenchard, the commander of the Royal Flying Corps in France argued that the only way to counter the German bombing was to attack them in their homeland. Smuts committee eventually recommended Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service be combined into the Royasl Air Force. He was also a member of the University Officers Training Corps and on 14th August 1914 was commissioned into the West Yorkshire Regiment. He did not sail for France until 20th July 1916 as one of several hundred re-inforcements for the Regiment's 2nd Battalion after they had lost three quarters of their strength in the July offensive.
