The Holy Bible, Containing the Old and New Testaments: With Arguments Prefixed to the Different Books
Manchester, UK, G. Swindells, 1791. Leather Bound. Heavy 4to. The Ostervald translation, first published in French in 1724, and in English in 1790, with only 24 plates (ESTC N471805). Our offering, the 1791 edition, is printed in double columns, and consists of the Old Testament, the Apocrypha, and the New Testament. The OT contains 32 full page copper engravings (lacking one); the NT contains 17 (several of which have closed tears, one of which lacks a portion of the image). Bound in original old sheep, the binding now thoroughly dilapidated. The title page and first two chapters of the Book of Genesis are absent, and the next 20 pages are chipped and thumbed. Starting with the Book of Moses, the condition of the individual pages improves, although there are a few instances of what appear to be childish scribbling (in pencil, thankfully) and several pages have closed tears (easily repairable). Both the Apocrypha and the NT are complete and do not have the issues with preliminary pages as affect the OT. This bible concludes with 'A Table of Offices and Conditions of Men', 'An Index to the Holy Bible', 'An Alphabetical Table of the Proper Names in the Old and New Testaments', 'A Collection of Names and Titles Given to Jesus Christ', and 'A Collection of the Appellations given to the Church of God in the Scripture.' Other than as noted, the text is quite clean, with occasional foxing and corner turning. The front board is detached (but present); the rear board is attached. Priced with all faults. Ill.: copper-plate engravings. 'Translated at the desire of, and recommended by The Society for Propagating Christian Knowledge.'.
