HAENFFLER, M. Johann [Johann Hanflers], Der Verschmachtenden Seelen, Hertzens Trost Und Theil: Aus Den Sonn-Und Fest-Tags-Evangelien, Durchs Gantze Jahr [Etc. ]
HAENFFLER, M. Johann [Johann Hanflers]
Der Verschmachtenden Seelen, Hertzens Trost Und Theil: Aus Den Sonn-Und Fest-Tags-Evangelien, Durchs Gantze Jahr [Etc. ]
Frankfurt, Germany, Friedrich Eichorns, 1692. Leather Bound. pp. 1072, [16]. Thick 4to. Bound in period full leather over wooden boards. Title page in red and black letters. The text is in the Suelterlin form of German, and the pagination is continuous to page 1,072, when follows sixteen pages of unnumbered text, ending abruptly, thus lacking following pages, the quantity unknown. The only copy of this title, shown on WorldCat, is being held by the university library in Halle / Saale, Germany, and indicates a pagination of [4], [588]. Our copy is bound in full brown leather, with evidence of some very early repairs. Both the binding, and the edges of the pages, show considerable wear. Preliminary and end pages, in particular, are chipped at edges, and darkened. Front blanks, and inside rear board contain hand-written notes, in various early hands, describing what appears to be a family genealogy. The binding is weak but intact, with the rear board only attached at top corner, but the text may be read without undue trepidation. A very scarce work. A German book of days, and prayers. The title translates as: 'To the Sweltering Souls / Hearts Consolation and part/ out of the [?] and / festive days gospels / Through the entire year / and several sayings (or proverbs) for/ the High Festive Days and Afternoons / Next to two preachings at the End / for Preparation [?] Holy Communion and blissful death / introduced / In which everything is briefly explained / and directly to be used for edification'. .

Hale, Matthew Sir, Knight, Late Chief Justice of the Kings-Bench, Contemplations Moral and Divine: In Two Parts
Hale, Matthew Sir, Knight, Late Chief Justice of the Kings-Bench
Contemplations Moral and Divine: In Two Parts
London, 1682. Leather Bound. pp. 360, 308. Contents collated, and four instances of mis-numbering of pages noted, but text is continuous. 8vo. Finely re-bound in full leather, with five raised bands to spine and red title label. Part I contains a full page frontispiece of Hale, engraved on copper, an unsigned Preface and a brief page outlining the contents. Part II contains a separate title page, Preface and table of contents. The contents show some foxing, and uneven trimming of pages, else in quite good, and perfectly legible, condition. Two small blemishes to margins. Hale (1609 - 1676) was a famous English barrister, judge, legal scholar and philosopher. He was counsel for Sir John Bramston (1641) and Archbishop Laud (1643); he was said to have offered to plead for Charles I during his impeachment; he took a prominent part in the legal affairs of Cromwell's parliaments during the interregnum, and was appointed a justice of the Court of Common Pleas in 1654. In 1660, he was made Lord Chief Baron of the Exchequer and knighted in 1662, the same year during which he presided at the trial and conviction of two women charged with witchcraft. In 1671 he was appointed Lord Chief Justice of the Court of King's Bench. During his lifetime, he published two scientific works. His posthumous works include this title (first published in 1676) and 'Pleas of the Crown' (1678). Our offering is in two parts; the first 'Printed for W. Shrowsberey [sic] and J. Leigh, and are to be Sold by J. Phillips at the 'Seven Stars' in St. Paul's Church-yard, and H. Rodes next door to the Bear Tavern near Bride-lane in Fleet-street.' And the second part 'Printed for William Shrowsbury at the 'Bible' in Duke-lane, and John Leigh at Stationers-Hall'. Ill.: frontispiece of Hale.

[Hall, Robert] Published under the Superintendence of Olinthus Gregory, LL.D., F.R.A.S.
The Works of Rev. Robert Hall, A.M. (Three Volume Set)
New York City, Harper & Brothers, 1838. Leather Bound. 8vo. Uniformly bound in full calf. Engraved frontispiece. Each of these three volumes is noticeably bumped, scuffed & rubbed. On the front free endpaper of each are stamped the words 'section' and 'shelf'. There is a small, very old, bookseller's stamp on the front pastedown of volume I. The hinges and joints are generally tight, but one or two are a trifle weak, and the front board of Vol. III is hanging by one cord. The contents show some light, sporadic, foxing. Overall, the volumes can be handled, and read, with normal care and are thus still in good to good plus condition. Hall (1764-1831) was a Baptist divine, reputed to have first preached at age 11. He created great controversy with his 'Modern Infidelity considered with respect to its Influence on Society' (published in 1800, contained within vol. I of this set). These three volumes contain 'Sermons and Charges', 'Sermons not before Published', 'Tracts, Political and Miscellaneous', 'Articles from the Eclectic Review', 'Miscellaneous Pieces', 'Notes on Sermons', and 'Letters'. With a brief memoir of his life by Dr. Gregory, and observations on his character as a preacher by Rev. John Foster. .
