Sturlunga Saga
Reykjavik, Iceland, Sigurfur Kristjansson, 1913. Paperback. pp. 333. Small 8vo. Paper covers a bit 'thumbed' & a bit ragged; else very good condition. Pages uncut. Text is in Icelandic. The Sturlunga saga is a collection of Icelandic sagas by various authors from the 12th and 13th centuries. It was first assembled in the 14th century. The main part of the Sturlunga consists of the Islendinga saga written by Sturla Thorvaldson (1214-1284). This compilation we have was edited by Sveinsson and is quite scarce, the more common compilation being edited by Gudbrand Vigfusson. No copies of this title were found listed in either the Norwegian, Swedish, or Danish national libraries. WorldCat lists 16 different editions of the Sturlunga saga, but only one listing is for this title (with Sveinsson and Bjarnason Bjorn as editors). It shows that the saga was published as four volumes in two; the last two being edited by Sveinsson. Our copy only contains the saga as edited by Sveinsson. Interestingly, even though WorldCat shows multiple copies of the one volume of Sveinsson's edition in institutional holdings worldwide, further research reveals that most of the copies listed are different editions than ours - with different editors.
