The Jewel of Death
London, Ward, Lock & Co. Limited, 1902. 1st edition. Hardcover. pp. 330, ads.Small 8vo,,Bound in original red cloth, with boxed titles lettered in gilt,Bleiler notes in Science Fiction: The Early Years (pp. 490-491) that the name 'Huan Me' is 'probably a pseudonym for a British author, perhaps to be read 'you and me'. A fairly frequent contributor of sensational fiction to the British variety magazines around the turn of the century'. The pseudonym 'Huan Me' is not listed in any of the standard reference works on pseudonyms, viz. Atkinson, 'Dictionary of Literary Pseudonyms'; Sharp, 'Pseudonyms and Personal Nicknames'; Halkett and Laing, 'A Dictionary of Anonymous and Pseudonymous Literature of Great Britain'. This title mentioned in Bleiler, 'Science Fiction: The Early Years (p. 491 - with incorrect date of publication shown), and referenced in Hubin (p. 283). Five other novels have been attributed to this author, although three of six titles currently offered for sale on the internet are, in fact, photocopies of short stories by this author. Our copy of 'The Jewel of Death' lacks the frontispiece by S. H. Vedder. The binding is sprung, and the rear hinge is beginning to split. However, nothing (other than the frontispiece) is loose, or missing. The boards are rubbed at the edges, and lightly soiled, more so to the spine. The contents are clan, and there are no former owner's amrkings. A good copy. .
