LAXNESS, HALLDOR KILJAN
Holl Sumarlandsins
Reykjavik, Iceland, Bokautgafan Heimskringla, 1938. 1st edition. Paperback. pp. 332. 8vo. Our copy is bound in the original undistinguished paper wraps. The spine is slanted and wrinkled. The covers are worn and turned at the edges, with light general soiling. Small oval sticker at the top of the front cover. Ink inscription (in Icelandic) on half-title page. Binding splitting between pp. 240/241, else clean and tight. A good copy, notwithstanding. The text is in Icelandic. Laxness (1902-1998, birth name Halldor Gudjonsson) was perhaps the pre-eminent Icelandic novelist of the 20th century. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1955 and, due to his fervent socialism, the Stalin International Award in 1949. He wrote a series of epic novels which explored the reality of Icelandic life, past and present, and generally rejuvenated Icelandic literature. This title, along with the other three, have been translated into English, and other languages. A first edition, in the author's native tongue, is remarkably scarce. The second part of Laxness' famous tetrology 'Heimsljos' or 'The Light of the World'.

LUNDBLAD, HARRIET
Konan I Soldlinum
Akureyi, Iceland, Bokautgafan Nordri, 1947. pp. 283.4to,,In original card covers with original dust wrapper present,The binding of the book is not well done, seeing as the pages are glued to the card covers. The contents are now shaken, although nothing is loose. There are two pieces of yellow cellophane tape to the right margin of the fust jacket, one of which has partially adhered to the the front card cover of the book. Small rectangular rubber stamp, the provenance of which is uncertain, on half title page, and title page. Contents otherwise clean. Overall, still a fairly good copy. The text is in Icelandic. It does not seem that Lundblad, who appears to have been a Swedish author, published any other novels, at least under this name (there is a suggestion that 'Harriet Lundblad' is a pseudonym). This title (which translates as 'The Horsewoman') was first published in Sweden the previous year as 'Ryttarinna' and released in Germany as 'Die Reiterin' in 1947. This is therefore a scarce title: as at date of cataloguing, no copies listed for sale or in institutional holdings. The front panel of the dust wrapper shows an illustration of a woman mounted side saddle on a horse in the mountain.
