Boston, Mayhew & Baker, 1860. First American edition. Hardcover. pp. 68. Slim 8vo. Bound in a variant blue 'pebbled' cloth with gilt lettering. First published privately in 1841, this is the first American edition, more commonly seen in a red pebbled cloth. This copy has the extra illustrated title page, protected by tissue guard. Ink gift inscription on front free endpaper dated 1860. The spine ends are rubbed as are the tips (corners) of the boards. Light scuffing to cloth but gilt illustration on front board still bright. Hinges starting but binding tight. Pages 59/60 creased with small marginal closed tear. Some light marginal soiling and foxing to contents. Overall, a good, to good plus, copy. Pasted down to the rear endpaper is an illustration from Harpers Weekly (1890) entitled 'The King of the Golden River'. Ill.: Richard Doyle illustrations.
