The Wheat Pit
Chicago, IL, Argyle Press, 1925. Hardcover. pp. 63. Slim 8vo. Our copy of 'The Wheat Pit' is bound in the original green paper over boards, lettered and ruled in black. With a black-and-white photo frontispiece showing 'the pit' in action. The binding is slightly cracked at the title page, otherwise the book is in very good condition, with virtually no wear to the boards. The original dust jacket is present, showing the original printed price. It is slightly creased along the top edge, and very slightly chipped at the top and bottom. There is a bit of rubbing, and a very faint rubber-stamped name to the front panel, but otherwise it is in good+, to very good, condition. Dies was born in Springfield, Oregon, in 1891. His first book was 'The Wheat Pit', published in November, 1925, and reprinted later the same month (our copy is one of the latter). Dies specialized in the writing of non-fiction and fiction books dealing mainly with 'big business', and the buying and selling of commodities. His 1935 title, 'Street of Adventure' is one of the scarcest, and most sought-after, business books of the 20th century: when a copy surfaces, it can be offered for as much as $7,500! Dies wrote 'The Wheat Pit' in 1925, and followed it up in 1929 with a novel entitled 'The Plunger - A Tale of the Wheat Pit'.
