ND (1799). 1st edition. Vellum. Larger 8vo. Bound in full contemporary vellum with morocco spine label. Contains 81 of 82 copper engravings by Tomasso Piroli of various ancient Roman buildings, temples, and monuments, such as the Coliseum, the Pantheon, the Obelisks etc. drawn to scale, showing scale in both Roman palms and French feet. Typically, there are several external profiles and one or two interior plans. Each engraving is very finely executed and shows little foxing to the image (although such is present in the margins), and measures approximately 8 x 12 cm. There are a few neat, pencilled, notations in the margins of some of the plates, and one blank rear page is fully annotated in pencil. There is also a nicely executed drawing, in pencil, on the (blank) reverse of plate 59, of a portion of plate 60. As is typical, the vellum binding is soiled, and has caused the boards to bow, and the joints are partially cracked, but the binding remains tight. Early ink inscription on the top right of the title page. Eight pages of text, containing mainly the description of the plates. Ill.: engravings.
