He was well known for his water-colour pictures of Alpine Scenery, and was one of the earliest members of the Alpine Club. He was drawing master at Rugby School for a great many years, and is still remembered with affection by many old Rugbeians. He was the author of several important works of great utility to the student - "Foliage and Foreground Drawing," "Landscape Painting in Water-colours," "Drawing from Nature," "Large Studies of Trees," etc." - See Obituary, The Times, Monday, Oct 6, 1890 *** "A tour-de-force of Leightons colour printing. It contains 24 full page color plates by Leighton Brothers, of such variety that together they make of the book a kind of manual of color printing. In instructing beginning watercolorists, Barnard here showed the successive states of producing a drawing; at the same time this illustration showed the successive stages of printing a color plate. Among other prints in the book are some excellent examples of Leightons new method of coloring with relief metal plates. There are also a number of interesting studies in color juxtaposition. The volume is remarkable for the continued brilliancy of its colored inks" - See J. Friedman, Color printing in England , no. 83.".
