Mary Fedden: Enigmas And Variations. Christopher Andreae .
Aldershot : Lund Humphries 2007 9780853319535. First edition. Hardback with very good illustrated dustwrapper. 29.7cm x 24.7cm x 2.0cm . pp.176 . A very good dustwrapper with coloured illustrations of the artist's paintings. Dark blue boards with silver gilt titles to spine. Just a little light rubbing to the edges. A very good book, profusely illustrated in colour. VG/VG. ** Press release: "Mary Fedden (1915-2012) is one of Britain's most popular artists. The focus of this acclaimed book, in celebration of her life's achievement, is the artist's creative process in various different media - oil, gouache, pencil and collage. While Fedden is often considered almost exclusively a still-life painter, still life was far from being her only preoccupation, as this book shows. Fantasy and imagination always also played a strong part, as is particularly evident in her small gouaches. A quietly surreal, enigmatic streak runs through much of her work. Fedden's collages are a witty and affectionate homage to the work of her husband, Julian Trevelyan. They lived, worked and travelled together from 1949 to 1988. The book re-emphasises her debt to him, but also her independence, even during their early life together when he stimulated her move into Modernism. In an engaging text, which draws on numerous conversations with the artist during her final years, Christopher Andreae considers why Fedden has always had such a popular following, looks at the English quality of her work, and talks about the commercialisation of her art and her attitudes to the art market. Fedden is shown to be an original, serious and prolific artist, a draftsman of unusual sensitivity and prowess, and a colourist of power and subtlety. Profusely illustrated with works from private and public collections, this is a book for Mary Fedden's existing devotees as well as newcomers to her work.".

He was well known for his water-colour pictures of Alpine Scenery, and was one of the earliest members of the Alpine Club. He was drawing master at Rugby School for a great many years, and is still remembered with affection by many old Rugbeians. He was the author of several important works of great utility to the student - "Foliage and Foreground Drawing," "Landscape Painting in Water-colours," "Drawing from Nature," "Large Studies of Trees," etc." - See Obituary, The Times, Monday, Oct 6, 1890 *** "A tour-de-force of Leightons colour printing. It contains 24 full page color plates by Leighton Brothers, of such variety that together they make of the book a kind of manual of color printing. In instructing beginning watercolorists, Barnard here showed the successive states of producing a drawing; at the same time this illustration showed the successive stages of printing a color plate. Among other prints in the book are some excellent examples of Leightons new method of coloring with relief metal plates. There are also a number of interesting studies in color juxtaposition. The volume is remarkable for the continued brilliancy of its colored inks" - See J. Friedman, Color printing in England , no. 83.".
