Shade soon met others interested in the Grabhorn bounty. The first was Pleasant Potter, an old squaw man who was once Custers best scout. There was Horseblanket Mary, a broken down hag who made a living cheating Indians at cards, a deputy named Hicks, whose courage had a price tag, and Bess Durrell, a squatters daughter with a face like an angel and a mind like something else. But if Brown and his scatter gun had his way the bounty was going uncollected." ANDERSON, BARBARA
The House Guest
New Zealand, Victoria University Press. 1995, Edition Unstated. (ISBN: 0864732880) Soft Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. NZ Fiction. Anderson digs more deeply into the layers of human behaviour, challenging readers with the experience of love and loss, and the subsequent unexpected dilemmas. The novel differs in many ways from her earlier work, particularly in its reversal of readers early expectations. Located in 1990s New Zealand, its comedy is not as broad, the focus deliberately diffused. If, in her earlier books form shaped content, in this novel, set in Wellington and Central Otago, the reverse is true. The scope is broader and the plot more ambitious in its deliberate use of uncertainty and suspense. 312 pages, name to ffep and light edge browning o/w crisp. #New Zealand Literature#. Very Good.
