At the start of World War I, he fled from to London where he met writers such as John Gould Fletcher, Aldous Huxley and D. H. Lawrence, and Imagist poets such as Ezra Pound, T. S. Eliot and Richard Aldington. He was noted for his book illustrations. The Foreword to the tale by Jean de Bosschère provides a lovely lead in to the story and his personal approach to writing and illustrating Weird Islands. This innovative tale was greeted with contemporary critical acclaim.
