THE CAXTON CLUB; VICTOR MARGOLIN (INTRO); LYNN MARTIN (DESIGN); JOHN ALDERSON (PHOTOGRAPHY)
Chicago Under Wraps: Dust Jackets from 1920 to 1950
Chicago: The Caxton Club, 1999. 0940550105. Limited Edition. First Printing. Soft Cover. ISBN: 0940550105. Limited Edition (only 500 copies). Publisher's glossy wraps. Profusely illustrated with color photographs. This is a catalogue published by The Caxton Club of Chicago in conjunction with an exhibition organized by the Caxton Club and held from November 29, 1999 to January 10, 2000 at the Ryerson and Burnham Libraries at The Art Institute of Chicago. The dust jackets in the exhibition, all printed between 1920 and 1950, are historically significant. Some depict scenes of Chicago; some were designed by Chicago-based graphic artists; and some were published by Chicago firms. They reveal trends in book design and illustrate a rich period of publishing in the Midwest's leading metropolis. "The book jacket's rise to prominence during the 1920s was part of a general expansion of the publishing business in North America," writes Victor Margolin, professor of art history at the University of Illinois at Chicago, who is the author of the Introduction to the catalogue.. The volume is in perfect, pristine condition, unmarked, tight, square and clean. NEW.. Color Photographs. 4to 11" - 13" tall. 12 pp. New with No dust jacket as issued .

CHRISTIE'S
The Helmut N. Friedlander Library, Part II (Ny, April 24, 2001)
NY: Christie's East, 2001. First Printing. Hard Cover. Illustrated by Various. Publisher's full gray linen cloth, gilt lettering on cover and spine. Profusely illustrated entirely in color. This is the catalog for Part II of Christie's Sale No. 9630, held in New York on April 24, 2001. 185 Lots. "Helmut Friedlaender's wonderful incunabula - his library's forte - and to a lesser extent the selective group of medieval manuscripts, the milestones of science and literature of later centuries, demonstrate what could still be done in traditional collecting at a time when it seemed to some cognoscenti that choice might be running out. If desire was strong enough, means and energy sufficiently available - and Mr Friedlaender had all of these - rare books were to be found. In fact, he showed two other qualities essential to any collector: persistence and patience." Lots 186-559 (those comprising this Part II). These include 49 lots which comprise "a highly unusual and carefully formed collection of documents dating from the 12th to the 20th centuries which bear seal impressions in wax. Seals of this type were affixed to a wide range of documents in order to certify the authority and validity of the contents, whether an indenture, appointment, proclamation or legal agreement." - Catalog..
