SMITH, WILLIAM; WILLIAM ALDIS WRIGHT (ED)
A Concise Dictionary of the Bible, for the Use of Families and Students
Boston: Little, Brown, and Company, 1865. 1st American Edition. 1st Printing. Leather. Half brown leather over silk boards, spine in six compartments separated by raised bands, gilt lettering on one red and one black label in two compartments on spine, gilt borders above and below each band, pink endpapers. Generously illustrated with B&W in-text illustrations and maps. Sir William Smith (1813 – 1893) was an English lexicographer. He was known for his advances in the teaching of Greek and Latin in schools. Perhaps the most important of the books Smith edited were those that dealt with ecclesiastical subjects. These were the Dictionary of the Bible (1860–1865); the Dictionary of Christian Antiquities (1875–1880), undertaken in collaboration with Archdeacon Samuel Cheetham; and the Dictionary of Christian Biography (1877–1887), jointly with Henry Wace. This condensation of his "Dictionary of the Bible" was made by William Aldis Wright, M.A, Librarian of Trinity College, Cambridge, under the direction and superintendence of Professor Smith. Covers mildly rubbed and worn, front hinge just starting, some old dampstains in margins of a few pages, former owner's initials on ffep, else fine; otherwise unmarked, tight, square, and clean. VERY GOOD. B&W Illustrations and maps. Thick 8vo 8" to 9" tall. (iv), 1039 pp. Very Good with No dust jacket as issued .
