Paris, Chez Le Pan, Rue S. Guillaume la premiere porte Cochere a droite en entrant par la rue S. Dominique 1791 from editor's note in another vol. Finely engraved plates (49 of 50) + engraved titlepage. Plates all "del" or "invenit" by Gravelot or Cochin,. 232 by 153mm Volume III (of IV) octavo "en brochure", uncut thus edges dusty with all illustrated plates loosely laid in but all text pages in gatherings of 8 leaves. Half title + engraved titlepage + 48 plates but the first plate lacking its text [ie pages 1 & 2] + 100pp + partial index (index lacks A-N pp101-4 but p105/6 present covering letters N to Z). The plates are not within the collation and loose (as from the publisher) and only some are numbered but numbers are not sequential and several have the same number although the plates are not the same. All plates face a text page with the subject that matches the title opposite. *An outstanding collection of engraved emblematic figures for the use of artists and amateurs."Hubert-Francois Bourguignon, commonly known as Gravelot (1699-1773), was a French engraver, a famous book illustrator, designer and drawing-master. Born in Paris, he emigrated to London in 1732, where he quickly became a central figure ..through the media of book illustrations and engraved designs as well as by the examples of luxury goods in the 'French taste' (Wikipedia).

Augsburg, Johann Ulrich Krausen 1st edition of the 1st work. 1706 at preface + 1715 full page copperplate frontispiece + quater page copperplate engraving to titlepage and quarter page headpiece to Preface + Illustration to PART TWO +full-page frontis to . folio [315 x 203mm] black morocco spine on 5 raised bands gilt titled & gilt decorations to raised bands & compartments ruled in gilt small leather tips to corners. Black cloth sides. [rubbed to head and foot of spine & all edges/ two small cloth losses else sound and neat] Half-title in large decorative script + frontis. + titlepage + [4pp=Preface dated 1706 by Kraus] + [1p =Register] + 1p=blank + 70 copperplates + Copperplate title with large illustration to Second Part + Second, different frontispiece +plates numbered 71 - 120. BOUND WITH copperplate titlepage by Kraus dated 1715 + fullpsge frontispiece + 30 further plates.The printed titlepage is somewhat cropped at the top to the word "BIBLISCHES" with loss to the curlicues and just touching the capital B. All plates are printed one side only and in the first two parts of the 1706 book each has a large rectangular picture with a heading above and 3 lines of text below. The lower half having 3 line of text above the emblematic illustrations which usually consisted of an elaborate circular frame often with smaller roundelles within the frame including some captions or text and with a central illustration. This additional Title has a similar format of large rectangular illustration under a title but the lines below are in six line paired couplets and the emblematic pictures in the bottom half are of more varied shapes such as octagonals, two-part pictues, free flying figures and some rather larger engravings. All of these elements are printed from one large copperplate of 28 x 17cm. There are 7 tears without loss including 2 with old repair leaving slight discolouration. None of the tears touch any printed matter, all but 1 are in the margin,with the one in the plate area but not into any illustrated part. There is some finger soiling mainly to the lower corner, minor foxing and one small hole due small ink spot having eaten a .5cm hole in the paper with the page before and after having a small residual stain from this but it is very near to the edge of the picture so is hardly noticeable. Previous owner's stamp to blank endpaper at front and rear,same to corner of first half title no other markings. The 2nd edition of the Augen- & Gemueths-Lust was printed in 8vo. Girardet, some signed Sargent. . 138x84mm cloth spined printed pictorial boards (tips worn/foot of spine split/spine label chipped/edges with paper loss to boards) 400pp. slight browning to edges and new endpapers. Except for ink name at top of half title which has bled through to margin of frontis and marginal repair to foredge of this page the contents are V.G. Many charming vignette engravings with good details (see Rochambeau 898 "reimpression of 1862 ed").

Lacks front fly leaf and half title has neat ownership inscription else clean and tight. *Fables in German text throughout from a wide variety of authors and illustrators.

Small octavo calf-spined boards, spine on 5 raised bands decorated gilt with rubbed gilt label (label slightly damaged, hinges starting to split but sound). Engraved titlepage (splits without loss repaired by mounting on old paper) + printed title (small repair at top) + [10]pp prelims +[20]pp life of author etc. +103pp +[7]pp including further poems by Luiken + plate list + publisher's book list - complete. Rear pastedown has an old bill 1914 for auction purchase. Minor signs of use, several small marginal tears without loss, but neat, tight and paper crisp. *A lovely Emblem book by the Dutch engraver Luiken. The emblematic plates show children's games - dolls, knucklebones, jacks, tops, kites, archery (cross bow), skip rope, soap bubbles, hoops, sling shot, hobby horse - also GOLF (Kolf) in great detail and charming domestic scenes - being sent off to school with hornbook etc.

One leaf of Preface reinserted else an exceptionally clean crisp copy of these emblems each accompanied by an explanatory poem + biblically referenced texts, common in Luyken`s work. These emblems are less graphic than the work Luyken is known for.

Index is missing. Title page is dusty and some fingering throughout. The two pastedowns have inscriptions "Desen Bock Joc aen joannes Van Poppel den 18 February Anno 1757" & "Desen Bock hoor tot aen Matthys Lambertus van Poppel woonende in de been houders straedt in Sinte cristoffel anno 1745 tot antwerpen" There is also a Bibliotec stamp below the front inscription and a few pencil notes.

Some foxing and off-setting from the emblems [here called hieroglifica & the two folding plates], but all in good condition. The paper strong and crisp, with a little staining and foxing, though no impact on text. Landwehr (Emblem & fable books) 753. *HERTSPIEGHEL is a summary and compedium of more complex works by Spieghel. A later more complete version of the 1723 ed. 1730 Tirion edition RARE.

Small quarto, 197x156mm, red spined boards (gilt titling of spine faded and nearly illegible, hinges rubbed, tips sl.worn but neat and sound); (x)+218(of 220)+(iv);(4)+xii+142 (of 144)+90(recte 98)pgs; The 4 missing leaves supplied in good facsimiles (comprising half TP with explication of frontis on its back + The frontis which is repeated in Part 2 + 2 leaves with text and an emblem on each). Minor edge browning. Two works bound together, the first edition consisted only of Part I with 50 emblems. The emblems are nearly full page having a caption and number above and a few lines of moral below and are detailed and lively scenes of life in 18th century Holland. The 4 plates of The Spiegel are printed on one side only (versos blank) and numbers repeating that of the facing page. *The illustrations show children, street scenes, household occupations, trades, astronomers, watching naval battles from shore, exploring foreign lands and meeting Africans, making cider, having hunting accidents etc. (Landwehr 759 & 760; Praz p.502).

Duodecimo (172x100mm) gilt ruled roan spined marbled boards (head/foot of spine leather chipped/spine slit to lower compartment of spine) iv;127pgs Inscription to pastedown dated 1859 another inscription to fly leaf. Some offsetting of the illustrations onto the facing text page. Contents leaf nearly detached and has a few spots the largest 2cm. Also has a neat inscription to top margin. About 4 other leaves have small marks but not fingered nor foxed and no tatty edges or tears (Osborn 570 has imperfect copy). Charming illustrations.
