London, Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge 1890's approx Woodengraved plates [4] . 180x120mm olive green pictorial cloth gilt lettered to cover and spine (tips rubbed/spine very darkened and cloth slightly marked). Frontis. +titlepage +160pp +8pp publisher's catalogue. Prize bookplate to pastedown from Brighton St. Peter's National Schools dated 1896. A few signs of use but generally clean and tight and text highly readable. *Story of a boy who is doesn't apply himself at school, is sent to a tutor where he again avoids working hard but comes to admire his tutor. During a flood in the nearby town he behaves courageously and saves many mill families and at last his parents have something to be proud of. A story highlighting Victorian values. Not the 1879 edition of the book.

Over 9 inches x 6.2 TWELVE MONTHLY ISSUES never bound up EACH with a Fine full page illustration titled The Prize No.1 [to 12] the Month & 1900 [one penny] with caption to plate below and "printed in Holland". Minor signs of use, no tears and all 164pp consecutively numbered to each issue. The December issue has the titlepage bound in for making up the 1900 annual. Bright and WITH the loose plate given with the January 1901 issue in addition to the January plate. This extra plate has no title above, only the plate caption below, and was designed to act as frontispiece to the bound up copies. VERY RARE in this complete state with 13 fine chromoliths.
