RED RIDING HOOD

Manchester, Abel Heywood & Son toy book publishers circa 1880-11890's full page colour plates [4] + four line illustrations in the text. . 8vo Cover with large illustration of Red Riding Hood gathering flowers for her grandmother to the front cover, rear cover with full cover illustration of Heywood's toy Books and a top hatted man & his son -presumably the Heywoods on top of a dome with orange sky and logo "Still Right at the Top". [covers have some loss to the corners/some scratches & some soiling] Both first and last pages are glued to the inside of the covers and have both text and a line illustration. The one on the inside front cover has the caption "Little Red Riding Hood" and its line illustration is of of grandmother's cottage + 8 "untearable" leaves of which 4 are full page coloured illustrations making the text pages 10 in all. There are some finger marks and some tanning of the paper with the middle page having some rust to the staples holding the book together. The ending is an alternative to the usual ending. No copy found on COPAC or World Cat.

Some marginal tears never exceeding 1" and never any loss) (12 leaves) printed on one side only except for inside of covers which have a text page pasted down (as issued) Name on margin of first page & traces of pencilling to margin of first and last text page. A few minor signs of use but a neat nice bright copy with the famous Kronheim plates (for Kronheim see Rauri McLean's Victorian Book Design and Colour Printing).
