Quarto rose printed cloth spine with vignette signal mast, pictorial front board (tips & edges rubbed, lower front corner badly damaged, small piece missing from wheel of train) 2 inches thick and unpaginated, prize label to front free endpaper dated 1936 from Methodist Sunday School. Titlepage with blank area scuffed where pencil inscription was erased. Two text illustrations partially child-coloured, some text highlighted. Printed on thick paper, but some pages have edges worn.

Folio (28x38cm) green gilt pictorial cloth (repaired and most of front cover and spine relaid, front cover damp-marked) Edges Gilt, [4]+31 leaves. Most neatly cut and pasted on larger gilt-edged leaves, except for 9 full-page leaves. All printed one side only and most with light marks of former damp. *Second and enhanced edition of this beautifully printed book, which Ruari McLean calls an "outstanding example of Evans's colour printing" and "also Richard Doyle's masterpiece: it contains some of the most entrancing children's book illustrations ever made" (Victorian Book Design 2nd edn. 1972 p184). This copy may have been used by McLean - a cryptic MS note laid in says "V B D 2nd edition, 3 pp. of In Fairyland borrowed by R McL from Aunty Fanny 5.10.70".

One attachment re-attached and sl.beginnings of tears to attachment insertions but actually a very crisp clean copy. This book has one pop-up that works in two actions. There is a flap that explains that it must be closed carefully for continued working and here it works well (MONTANARO 116).
