Nurnberg, Johann Andreas Endter & heirs of Wolfgang 1668 Fine full-page engraved plates (65) numbered 1-63 with 2 bis plates (45 & 47) + 1 text illustration +full page elaborate copperplate coat of arms of Leopold I by C.N. Schurtz. . Folio old vellum (spine split repaired, front cover nearly detached). Bookplate of Bibliotheca Prieseriana (showing books on shelves) and small library stamp on pastedown. Titlepage in red and black with printer's mark of 2 female supporters with sun shining on clasped book with monogram AEW. Titlepage +36pp including full page copperplate coat of arms of Leopold I by C.N.Schurtz +1762pp + 34pp indices + [2]pp errata with a few part-lines of loss to lower outer corner & tatty edges. Double column Gothic type with shoulder notes throughout. Two marginal tears with loss hardly touching print & first page of dedication with cropping to outer edge, some corner creases, else clean and no worming/no foxing/no ink marks. Despite its huge bulk the book block is square and tight. *A fascinating early German account of travels and curisoties and one of the most famous illustrated natural history books of the 17th century (Nissen 648; Sabin 25463).

Small octavo damasked black roan with part of gilt title remaining to spine (spine missing about half but laid onto leather repair) All Edges Gilt xiv +335pp +[1]p printer's colophon. Front inner hinge only loosely held & lacks a few tissue guards but clean and tight. Contributors include Sir Walter Scott, Charles Lamb, Samuel T. Coleridge, Mrs. Hemans and many other leading lights of the time. The illustration list calls for 5 headpieces but only two are printed, space for the others is left blank. *A short-lived annual, this is the undated version of the first annual volume - its Preface and contents are nearly identical to the version dated 1828, but it has 335 pages (not 319), a few headpieces not printed and one plate (The Oriental Love-Letter) here missing. The plates and other "Embellishments" are beautifully printed in fine detail.

Noel Humphreys' Illuminated Illustrations of Froissart + 3 extra titlepages in color + 116 text wood-engravin. TWO VOLUMES Royal octavo (242x162mm) half morocco, gilt spine emblems, All Edges Gilt (tips rubbed but leather not worn through/spine edges shelf worn). Some foxing throughout mostly to guard sheets & margins. The hand-coloured plates are bright with text clean except around the guards. *Hand-colouring in finest detail similar to a sumptuous 15th century Book of Hours. The extra illuminated plates were first published separately in Noel Humphreys' "Illuminated Illustrations of Froissart selected from the MS. in the British Museum" (1844) and "Illuminated Illustrations .. selected from the MS. in the Bibliothèque royale, Paris, and from other sources" (1845). London, William Smith 1845 Hand-coloured plates (36 + colour illuminated Titlepage) heightened with gold & silver of miniatures selected by H. Noel Humphreys. . Royal 8vo calf-spined green damasced cloth sides with gilt morocco label (cloth worn & faded/tips with exposed boards and some fraying). A descriptive page precedes each plate. Plates on thick paper in bright condition and in BRILLIANT COLOUR with much gilding. The extra illuminated titlepage and the next 2 leaves have a small semicircular brown mark to the lower corner (max.1cm) a few small signs of use to margins but all the illustrations are bright unmarked, no tears, no writing, no colour smudging but stunningly fine.

Octavo Victorian blind stamped ribbed cloth (rebacked/ tips worn) Frontis + TP + xvi + 788pp + 162 plates with 322 illustrations. Some foxing, though mainly marginal and 2 plates with some staining while towards the end there is a marginal brown stain not touching the plate area but for the last few text pages just touching the letters. The yellow glazed endpapers are brown mottled. Illustrations 1-80 show nature mostly as groups of animals and plants. Illustrations 81-241 depict trades incl. several cooking scenes, miners, textile weaving, wig-makers etc. 243-256 cosmography & geography showing different religions, virtues. 269-282 show children playing, men playing billiards, wrestling, circus & theatres, lessons in fencing, dancing, balloon rides, fireworks, bullfights, horse racing, a marvellous train with a postillion blowing a horn & open coaches and a chimney like a barber's pole, later we see deep sea diving bells being used to salvage cannons. There is an example of slave traders, a summer fair and Christmas celebrations, finally a few more trades, eg. forging steel, the file maker, carpets being made, nightwatchman, messenger and post with finally a grave-side scene. Each illustration is accompanied by a 5 language text - English, German, French & Latin and, newly added for the first time in this edition, Italian. These describe the animals and the trades etc. This Gailer reworking of the Orbis Pictus is nearly a new book and makes one of the most complete book of trades (cf. Seebass 398 Wegehaupt I 697).

First leaf of index with 1" triangle torn out, some faint staining and some edge dusting since the pages are mostly uncut at fore-edge & bottom edge. This First volume was published 7 years AFTER the second volume and together are titled RERUM ANGLICARUM SCRIPTORUM VETERUM.It is substantially longer than the second volume and contains 15 monastic chronicles including William of Malmesbury's, The Chronica of John Wallingford, the Scottish History of John Fordun, among anonymous Manuscripts and less well known early annals. Coat of Arms Bookplate of William Henry Mason on FEP. Complete in itself. We do not have the other volume which has only 5 chronicles and the two are usually listed separately in COPAC libraries except in WING where they make up WING G-154 together.

Small quarto marbled paper boards, spine re-backed in old leather on 5 cords with 19th century red leather gilt title label laid on. First edition of this important early work on melancholia, neurology and alchemy - [xviii] +524pp +[11]pp index & errata +3 leaves blank. Lacks engraved titlepage (supplied in facsimile) and all but one of 6 plates. Printed Title and following 340pp badly cropped at fore-edge with loss of last letter of each line of title and most of marginal guide notes, remaining pages affected by light marks of previous damp at fore-edge. *Damaged and defective copy of very rare first edition of this important work on melancholia and neurology. Geiger came from a prestigious dynasty of German physicians working in Bavaria & Munich. Melancholia was then generally considered to result from excess black bile, which Galen had earlier described as the culprit in cancer. Geiger's book sets the disease in early-modern scientific context: chapters include essays on medicine, alchemy, natural science, literature, and mythology (FASEB Journal June 2012, Graesse, III, 40).

London, Henry Brome 1670 Fine frontispiece portrait of D'Espernon. . Presentation copy from author with inscription on top margin of titlepage ("E libris Sam: Leeke. Ex dono Dignissimi Authoris"). Folio (in 4's) 18th century half calf wide spine bands gilt compartments (hinges split but held by cords and inner hinge) [xvi]+651pp with brief publisher's catalogue after Finis on p651. Main titlepage in red & black + 2 additional titles but through paginated. Armorial bookplate of Lord Strathallen. Three marginal tears all without loss but one to the third titlepage being nearly 3" long. Some foxing passim, 3 neat marginal corrections in an early hand (to Preface and Authors Apology). *Quite a scarce book appearing in only one edition. The ex dono is probably from Cotton (not the French author). Charles Cotton (1630-1687) was a poet and author of several other translations and burlesques. His best known work is Scarronides but he also wrote on angling, billiards, gaming and even fruit trees.

Dr.Henry More dated 1683) +173-276 +[4]pp catalogue of books printed for Lowndes. Lacks pp131-2 (leaf supplied in facsimile). Titlepage browned/dusty with old name Joh: Wetherby to margin, corners rounded, margins bit chipped, 2nd title with another name blank verso of previous page, marginal paper repair to dedication page not touching print, other signs of use and a few pages at the beginning and end have marginal damp marks. Several inscriptions on blanks facing later titlepages inc. ownership poem dated Dublin 1795. *Glanvill wrote several books on occult matters the most famous being "Saducismus Triumphatus .. evidence concerning Witches and Apparitions". Here he defends belief in the prior existence of souls and thus reincarnation, also tied in with belief in ghosts, but as a sceptic he seeks empirical proof. His views and Dr. Rust's are then defended in Henry More's Annotations, all 3 thus virtually forming an early society of psychical research.

This was the first year of this periodical which was started in order to take down in short-hand the sermons of the two factions in the schism which had appeared in the Yearly Meetings of the Philadelphia Friends. Mr.Gould was employed by the joint consent of both parties to record verbatim and thus individuals would be able to judge for themselves as to the truth. Interspersed are short extracts from scripture and earlier Quakers including William Penn.

Quarto contemporary calf ruled and with corner ornaments (worn to all corners, top cover re-attached lower cover held by cords). Frontis portrait + Titlepage +[2]pp dedication +xvi +[18]pp contents & errata +731pp (recte 723pp since pp17-23 are omitted but catchwords & signatures are correct) +[1]p blank. Contents generally in good clean and crisp condition but damp has damaged outer margins of preliminaries and first dozen or so leaves of text. This affects margins and some side notes only except for frontis & titlepage which have margins repaired. Library stamp "Bib.Scriptorum, S.J. Londinii" on back of frontis with shelf mark to upper corner, titlepage with old owner's name Ed. Southcott on blank area. Cancellandum leaves at 2F4 & 2H2 with original stubs as required. *The first 4 editions of this Latin exposition & commentary on Descartes appeared in London between 1672 (1st) and this 1680 4th edition with an increased number of illustrations. In ten books starting with De Logica, II Theologia Naturalis, III Angels & Demons, IV & V Physics & Astronomy, VI Earth, Fire, Water Metals & Meteors, VII Living Things, VIII Man with much on eyes, vision & anatomy, IX & X the Passions & character of humans (WING 957).
