DEFOE,DANIEL] WRITTEN BY HIMSELF [ASCRIBED BY THE REAL AUTHOR, PROBABLY DEFOE, TO NICHOLAS MESNAGER ((1658-1714)]
MINUTES OF THE NEGOTIATIONS OF Monsr. MESNAGER at the Court of England, Towards the close of the last Reign [Queen Anne]. Wherein Some of the most Secret Transactions of that Time, relating to the Interest of the Pretender, and a Clandestine separate Peace, are detected and laid open. Written by himself. Done out of French.
London, S.Baker at the Black-Boy and Anchor .. 1st edition 1717 . Octavo calf rebacked on 5 raised bands (tips worn) 326pp. There are two variants of D2 - this copy has the catchword DONE on p51. Variable foxing/staining but paper strong and supple, neatly restored with reinserted endpapers. *According to the British Library this is in fact an original English work by Daniel Defoe. "To support the claim that the book was a genuine translation from the French of Nicholas Mesnager, an alternative titlepage was printed (reading) Minutes of the negotiation [sic] of Monsr. Mesnager at the court of England. .. Antwerp, printed for Jean van Borscelen. 1717'.. One title or the other was meant to be cancelled" (Moore). According to others, this is a forgery ascribed to Defoe, intended to influence the trial of his patron, Lord Oxford. Our titlepage does seem to be a cancel as it is stubbed in but this could have been done when the spine was repaired. The work seems to be universally catalogued under Defoe -even by libraries supporting the forgery theory. It is a piece of anti-Jacobite propaganda relating to the negotiations leading up to the Treaty of Utrecht (1713).

Amsterdam aux Depends du Corps des Militaires Francois 1767 +22pp. *D'Eon joined the spies serving Louis XV and travelled in Russia and England to pick up information for his master. He dressed sometimes as a lady and other times as a man presumably this was useful for his life as a spy. He served in the French Army in 1761-2, became charge d'affaires in London in April 1763, and then plenipotentiary minister. When the new ambassador from France arrived in London d'Eon was demoted and suffering under this he wrote this book spilling some of the secrets of his spying but keeping others in reserve as "insurance". After this publication he was not able to return to France and lived most of the rest of his life in England.
