P. Two Works in One Volume small quarto vellum on 5 raised bands ruled and with central blindstamp & red gilt spine label (tips bumped slightly soiled starting to split along hinge but covers firm). Neat name John Knott MD 1906 on free endpaper. Titlepages in red & black +[14]pp +239pp +[1]p blank and (2nd work) +[4]pp +288pp (blank before title present in Vol.1 but not required in Vol.2). Some corners dusty else a nice clean copy of two lesser known works bound together but from different publishers & different Flemish cities. Head- & tail-pieces & foliated initials, extensive editorial comments by Herman Venema, text in Latin with some Hebrew.

Small octavo contemporary full calf with 5 raised bands and gilt rules and maroon label (hinges cracking/tips worn and head & foot chipped) (Xiv)+272pp a neat copy. *After Cambridge Waller was elected to Parliament where he was a noted orator favouring the Royalists and plotting to oust the roundheads in what became known as Waller's Plot but this was discovered he was arrested, fined and exiled, returning only at the Restoration. He refined the heroic couplet, was a member of the Royal Society and held up as an example by Pope and Dryden. Best remembered for his lyric poems.

Lord Chancellor Eldon's copy, 12mo worn sprinkled tan roan on 5 rasied bands spine gilt in compartments (hinges cracked but held by cords/edges worn & patch of leather damage to covers) [8]p title + dedication + contents) +311pp. A few neat Latin notes but clean and tight. An Oxford text book that was in use for a long time. Bookplate of Lord Eldon the future Lord Chancellor of England and inscribed "J. Scott Univ. Coll. Oxon 1770" to the corner of the free endpaper. The future Earl was at University College, Oxford from 1766 to the early 1770's before going on to study law, eventually becoming Lord Chancellor of England and serving for almost 20 years.

Quarto contemporary panelled calf (rebacked & blind-tooled with black spine label/tips worn) 336pp +(vi)index The Ae of Aquaticae & Noxae are very faintly printed on the Titlepage and there is slight paper thinning to the paper in 4 small (1cm diameter) round areas and part of 2 letters have been strengthened with ink. Wepfer was the first to analyze the pharmacological effect of hemlock and its poison. In this treatise 1679 the author also reports the discovery of the duodenal glands.

Collation: viii, 456 pp. *Includes interesting correspondence of this young poet from humble background when he went up to Cambridge in 1804 until untimely death in 1806. Delightful Birket Foster illustrations, leather binding shows signs of use but still attractive.

Marsh in Black-Friars, and sold by all the News-Carriers in Town and Country. 1769 according to British Library . 195x120mm (in 4's) original sugar paper wrappers bound into half blue roan spine gilt titled (old auction ticket removal stain/tips worn). Uncut edges with some dusting 378pp end of 1st volume (all published at this time) but tipped to rear inner side of sugar paper covers "To the Public The sale of this work being so very extensive, occasions the Publisher to acquaint the Reader, that one Number of Vol.II of the Sufferings of John Wilkes Esq. will be regularly published every other Day." Three library catalogue entries of the 2 volume set mention a folding portrait but it is not clear whether this was issued with this first volume. This is the Clement K Shorter copy with his handsome art nouveau bookplate with the Walter Crane monogram. Shorter (1857-1926) a book collector and editor of the Illustrated London News and several other journals was also founder The Sketch (1893), The Sphere (1900), and The Tatler (1903). Scarce (ESTC T74070).
