Small octavo near contemporary marbled leather on 4 raised bands, covers gilt ruled with corner fleurettes, newer red gilt spine title label (rebacked with old spine relaid/recornered to tips) All Edges Gilt. Frontispiece + titlepage printed in red and black +[22]pp prelims +423pp. Inner hinges neatly repaired. Two line of Latin to fly leaf +ownership of 4 members of Longe family and G. Sparke, Risby 1748 to blank before frontis. Titlepage with crossed out name to upper corners and C-J to lower margin (WING H2834). *Meditation and introspection for a Christian life in order to reflect and seriously plan a Godly and good life with Horneck's advice and guidance. A very clean handsome early edition.

Small octavo laced through vellum spined boards (spine darkened/tips worn/paper scuffed) xviii +512pp. Bookplate to pastedown slight top margin dusting but a crisp neat tight copy. *Consists of three books of Elegies plus Christus Patiens and Lacrymae S.Petri and Ser.Leopoldo Vota bound with and through paginated with Guilielmus Becani's Idyllia et Elegiae. Each of these poems have separate dedications mostly to Queen Christina of Sweden and to Leopold Archducke of Austria. Neo-Latin Poetry by two Jesuit poets whose poetry was in print until at least 1830s.

Two Volumes in One small octavo vellum yapp fore-edge, old ink title to spine and red number (1cm damage to hinge & slight damage to yapp at top corner). All edges dyed red. Titlepage +[6]pp dedication +[4]pp epigrammata +1068pp +[38]pp indices +[2]pp errata +2 blank leaves; Titlepage as above but Seculum XVI dated 1655 +[9]pp dedication +[3]pp +954pp +[35]pp indices. Marks of former damp to fore-edge of 1st 4 leaves, ownership inscriptions at foot of pastedown 1663 and titlepage 1659, some marginalia & underlining. Text mainly in Latin but with occasional German in black letter. *A neat very thick vellum volume covering major religions Christian, Jewish, Mohamedan, Greek etc from 1400s to end 1500s with information on the Councils, edicts etc. and a short section on the False churches. The various volumes deal with different eras of Church history starting with the first 3 books on the early Church ending with 9th volume 1667 with a biography of Hottinger. The author and three of his children were dead drowning in the Limat river which flows into the lake of Zurich.

Small folio (280x210mm) purple decorated & gilt cloth with 4 colour-onlays bevelled boards (tips worn, 2" head of spine repaired/edges bit faded but gilt bright) All Edges Gilt Titlepage +Dedication page +6 plates with guard-sheets, inscription on FEP dated 1875 small corner tide mark to gutter corner never anywhere near the illustrated area. The poem is printed in red, blue and gold with fancy initial to each verse, the surround consists of colored floral decorations on gold ground with an inset etched illustration for each page. Each page is differently decorated. *Cf.McLean's "Victorian Book Design" for the interesting mixture of CHROMOLITHOGRAPHY & ETCHING on these plates "A Tour de force which is surprisingly successful" (p134).

Small octavo contemporary dark brown leather on 4 raised bands, dentelles with traces of gilt (traces of spine label, leather with a reptilian surface). Early bookseller's catalogue slip on pastedown. Title page +185pp with 3 further titlepages all dated 1696 within the through pagination. None have any publishing information. Some water-staining at foot of pages towards the end, paper otherwise crisp and white. *Attributed by the British Library catalogue to Sir Robert Howard, Whig politician and dramatist, co-author with Dryden (his brother-in-law) of The Indian Queen, later set to music by Henry Purcell.

Several pagination jumps & repeats but all catchwords and signatures correct. One 2.5 inch tear to upper margin and a few small marginal paper-faults, about 20 leaves with marginal worming never touching text. A very crisp, wide margined copy collating complete. The sub-titles vary as to periods/subjects they cover and the imprint of vol.2 no longer lists Harriman, the 3rd/4th volume is "for the widow of the author" (WING 3138).

The half title with gift inscription to Literary & Philosophical Society by N. Bennett "as a small remembrance of his friend Capt. Johnson .. 1854" Society stamp to verso of the map & titlepage, recto of the half title + six circular marginal stamps to text page margins. *The introduction of more iron into shipbuilding caused variations in the magnetic compass used for positioning. This was an early solution to the problem.
