MICROCOSMUS HYPOCHONDRIACUS Sive DE MELANCHOLIA HYPOCHONDRIACA TRACTATUS .. Concinnatus a Malachia Geigero, Electoralis Monachiensis .. Medico & Chirurgo ordinario.
Munich, Lucas Straub (first edition). 1652 Folding plate of veins and arteries (one only of 6 plates). . Small quarto marbled paper boards, spine re-backed in old leather on 5 cords with 19th century red leather gilt title label laid on. First edition of this important early work on melancholia, neurology and alchemy - [xviii] +524pp +[11]pp index & errata +3 leaves blank. Lacks engraved titlepage (supplied in facsimile) and all but one of 6 plates. Printed Title and following 340pp badly cropped at fore-edge with loss of last letter of each line of title and most of marginal guide notes, remaining pages affected by light marks of previous damp at fore-edge. *Damaged and defective copy of very rare first edition of this important work on melancholia and neurology. Geiger came from a prestigious dynasty of German physicians working in Bavaria & Munich. Melancholia was then generally considered to result from excess black bile, which Galen had earlier described as the culprit in cancer. Geiger's book sets the disease in early-modern scientific context: chapters include essays on medicine, alchemy, natural science, literature, and mythology (FASEB Journal June 2012, Graesse, III, 40).

REFLECTIONS UPON LEARNING,Wherein is Shewn the Insufficiency Thereof, in its Several Particulars: In Order to Evince the Usefulness and Necessity of Revelation.
London, A. Bosvile 3rd edition corrected 1700 . 8vo contemporary dark tan sprinkled leather with gilt red spine title label gilt dentelles [edges worn/hinges cracked but covers held by all cords] Titlepage +A2-8 [=Preface + Contents +Addenda/Advert.] +240pp The first six leaves with marginal worming affecting only the running headline of the preface and repaired with reversible transparent PAPER-tape.The last gathering with worm-holes to fore-edge margin have similar worming but have not been repaired as they are less obtrusive. There is some foxing or browning throughout with approx eight charming pointer-hands in the margins and about six marginal notes all by one owner in a near contemporary script. An interesting and rather critical enquiry into the Languages, philosophy,Astronomy, History, Geography, Law, Medicine, oriental teachings etc The author's conclusion is that learning is in great part purely imaginary knowledge and mankind's ignorance is great because all learning is imperfect only Divine truths through Revelation are certain.

Ludovico Granatensi [Luis De Granada ]
VITA CHRISTI... ex diversis ipius opusculis spiritualibus collecta in sexaginta duas meditationes seu capita digesta per Michaelem ab Isselt ex italico in Katinum sermonem translata haccque postrema editione diligenter recognita & novis Figuris exornata
Coloniae [Koln Germany], Arnold Quentelium 1607 woodcuts in the text [39 including on the titlepage] with three or four with old coloration. . 12mo vellum through laced lacking the ties and with traces of inked title to spine. [lower edges worn/ some staining to vellum] [10 ff includes titlepage + dedication + index] + 700pp neat inscription but also partially crossed out name to otherwise blank extra leaf. The end papers are newer and 6 leaves have been archivally repaired but there is still some tattiness to the fore-edges but not causing loss of text. Quite some variable browning, and 4 leaves with grey stain along fore-edge and two of which also have small holes with loss to a few letters but without loss to the meaning of the sentences. There is a curious page numbered 428 being the verso of a preceeding page. This is titled MEDITATIONES MODUS MEDITANDI PASSIONEM DOMINI with the appearance, layout and same woodcut as on the title page but without publisher's name but where this would be on a proper titlepage there are 3 lines of text that follow on to the next leaf. Altogether a bit a tired copy but the woodcuts are better than the usual with these 12mo books having faces with real expressions and background figures with clear figures and detailed clothing and scenery.
