WHOLE BOOK OF PSALMS Collected into English Metre .. Conferred with the Hebrew ..
London, Wilkins for the Company of Stationers 1718 . Octavo contemporary hand blind tooled calf on 5 raised bands compartments also tooled (tips quite worn but hinges only sl.rubbed/ 9x4mm hole to foot of spine) unpaginated but collated complete (304pp incl.index & Prayers). TP elaborately ruled in red and all other pages ruled in red on 4 sides as orginally done since the binding crops some red rules on a few pages. The binding tooling is made up of panelled rules with 4 floral corners + stars, and at least 5 other tools used to make combination ornaments. Marbled EPs with strange paper joining on pastedown but surely original to the time of binding. White EPs slightly marked & name written twice on EP. A very clean handsomely bound copy of the Psalms.

STILLINGFLEET, EDWARD (1635-1699)
ORIGINES SACRAE or a Rational Account of the Grounds of Christian Faith, as to the Truth and Divine Authority of the Scriptures, And the matters therein contained.
London, Henry Mortlock at the Phoenix in St.Paul's Churchyard 4th edition corrected and amended 1675 Titlepage in red & black. . THREE BOOKS in One but through-paginated. Quarto contemporary calf blind ruled on 4 raised bands (hinges cracked but held by cords/repaired to top & bottom compartment of spine & lower board & corners) Titlepage +[32] +619pp +publisher's booklist (TP+A2+(a-d4)+B-Iiii4). Titlepage edge browned, with signature of Edwd. Shand 1729. A few signs of use ie. small spots/corner creases here & there but no tears, no underlining or marginalia and having good wide margins and strong and supple paper. *Biblical truth asserted from historical sources and especially to show that the Christian faith was established in Britain before the Papal Catholic missions of St.Augustine and as these were a much later development so that the Pope had no historic authority in Britain. It claimed a proper independence of the Christian Church in Britain directly from the foundation by the apostle, St.Paul.

STUBBE,HENRY
JUSTIFICATION OF THE PRESENT WAR. AGAINST THE UNITED NETHERLANDS. Wherein the declaration of His Majesty is vindicated and the war proved to be Just, Honourable and Necessary. The Dominion of the Sea explained and his Majesties Rights thereunto Asserted .. ILLUSTRATED with sculptures
London, Henry Hills and John Starkey 2nd edition of the 1st volume 1st edition of the 2nd volume 1673 Copperplates 1 folding in volume One but lacks the Frontis. & 4 of 5 in "Further Justification.." (lacking the second coin plate) plates by W. Sherwin or. Two Volumes in One: bound with A FURTHER JUSTIFICATION OF THE PRESENT WAR .. Small quarto contemporary calf with red spine label raised bands (neatly rebacked/ tips slightly worn) all edges blue. Armorial bookplate Ilchester. Collation: (8)+80, (24)+80 +79-86 +57-136pp (ie. recte 168pp). First volume came out anonymously in the previous year, the FURTHER JUSTIFICATION is here in a first edition but it was soon reprinted with through pagination as a Single two-part volume. There is a plate list in volume 2 but none in volume 1. The missing plates are tipped in in good facsimiles. Some damp staining but mainly marginal with Preliminaries and first 2 leaves and last 6 or 7 leaves most affected. *A vehemently anti-Dutch volume written in Answer to "Considerations upon the Present State of the United Netherlands". The author includes illustrations of the tortures that the Dutch were supposed to have perpetrated. Yet war was unpopular with the British who sympathized with the Protestant Dutch and not with the allied Catholic French, who, like the English king were out to destroy a rival naval and trading nation. Stubbe's hatred was irrationally venemous but his discussion of principles of international law are interesting but become more one sided when referring to the trade with the Indies and Dutch interests in America. A strange mixture of typography, black letter, italic and capitals as well as side notes referring to Sodom and Gomora, the Bible, Socrates, etc in Greek, Latin, French and English (WING S6046, S6051).

BY THE AUTHOR OF "DOCTOR SYNTAX" [WILLIAM COMBE 1742-1823]
THE ENGLISH DANCE OF DEATH, from the designs of Thomas ROWLANDSON, with metrical illustrations, by the author of "Doctor Syntax." Vol.I + Vol.II.
London, R. Ackermann's Repository of Arts (printed J. Diggens). 1815, 1816 Hand-coloured plates (71 of 72 - lacks "the Waltz" in Vol.II) + hand-coloured frontis & engraved titlepage by Thomas Rowlandson. . Two Volumes gilt half black roan on 4 faux raised bands with red gilt-titled spine labels and marbled boards (tips and edges worn/rubbed). Hand-coloured engraved title with large vignette of 8 skeletons dancing in a graveyard + printed title +[4]pp Index to Vol.I + iii-viii Advertisement by the Author + 295pp; Vol.II hand- coloured frontis of Death atop a globe + printed title + [4]pp Index to Vol.II + 299pp. Almost all plates show off-setting to opposite leaf and "shadow" on page facing back of illustration. Some spotting or staining to margins of text pages and plates. One plate poorly re-inserted with brown glue, about 12 others with nicks or trimming of captions. All have 2 pin pricks to fore-edge margins, so this set was probably bound up from original parts issues, which usually had 3 plates per part and preceded the book editions. *PROVENANCE - the original owner of these books was the author's second wife Charlotte Combe, whose signature appears on the flyleaf of both volumes. Combe lived for many years imprisoned for debt within the limits of the King's Bench Prison - he married Charlotte in January 1814, shortly before the parts publication of the English Dance of Death, and died in the King's Bench 19th June 1823. His widow Charlotte afterwards went to live in Ireland with her friend Mrs Eugenia Curtis, widow of Joseph Curtis of Booterstown, whose son James Gray William Curtis later owned the books - his armorial bookplate is on the pastedown of both volumes. He died in 1870. The next owner was Henry A. Grimston whose signature March 13th 1873 is on the fly-leaves. Parts of this history are given in a laid-in typescript (signed R.R.J. 7/5/1905) addressed to the last recorded owner, R.G. Brown Esq.
