SALMASIUS,CLAUDE] (1588-1653)
DEFENSIO REGIA PRO CAROLO I ad serenissimum Magnae Britanniae Regem Carolum II,filium natu majorem, heredem & successorem legitimum.
Leiden is suggested as the place of printing but no indication given in the book, Sumptibus Regiis 1650 . Duodecimo vellum yapp edge with manuscript spine title title (bit darkened esp. to spine) (x) +472pp. *Anonymously published work by Claude de Saumaise in vindication of Charles I against the regicides and for the legitimate succession of his son. The Sumptibus Regiis shows that Charles II commissioned this work while in exile. Milton was deputized by Parliament to write a rebuttal to this work, the PRO POPULO ANGLICANO DEFENSIO (see our copy of this for sale V69033). The printing history of the Defensio is complicated as it also came out in Paris and Rotterdam in the same year (see Madan 5th series of The Library). A crisp clean tight copy.

Minor worming to later part of index and normal expected edge browning and a few spots but the paper is supple and readable. This work deals with study of Syrian mythology and comparison with a study of the antiquity of the Hebrew Old Testament and led to his reputation as an oriental scholar. His large collection of oriental books and manuscripts are at the Bodleian Library at Oxford. There seem to be two versions of this 3rd edition of 1662 by Brendel one of 28 preliminaries +331pp and ours [36] +373pp +[51p index] First written when Selden was in his early 20's it was not published until 1617 as is explained in the Preface to the first edition which is reprinted in this edition after a later Preface.
