MUSGRAVE,SAMUEL
TWO DISSERTATIONS I. On the GRAECIAN MYTHOLOGY II. AN EXAMINATION OF SIR ISAAC NEWTON'S OBJECTIONS to the Chronology of the Olympiads.
London, Printed by J. Nichols 1782 . Octavo contemporary roan gilt (rebacked with half of old spine leather laid on including most of spine label/corners worn). Titlepage +advert leaf +xxii (subscriber list) +half title +231pp. Victorian Institution label to pastedown with rules for the library's use. *The first edition published after the death of the author to benefit his widow including many Large paper copies including such for Dr.Johnson, Sir Josshua Reynolds, Sir Joseph Banks and others. The second of these treatises seeks to refute Isaac Newton's argument that peoples tend to exagerate the antiquity of their origins as a matter of vanity and thus falsified their chronology. He belived that the Greeks did this with the origin of the Olympiads. Musgrave in this disseration works through the victors of the Olympic games to give a different chronology that actually seems to push the first Olympiad to an even earlier period.

NAUNTON, SIR ROBERT (TRANSLATED INTO FRENCH BY JEAN LE PELLETIER)
Paris, Laurent D'Houry 1st edition 1683 Copperplate frontispiece of Queen Elizabeth + 2 further copperplates. . Duodecimo full roan gilt leather rebacked (tips worn) [24]pp +183pp + Advice to readers + Privilege. *This is supposedly a translation of the quite rare book by Robert Naunton FRAGMENTA REGALIA however that book, also in 12mo but rather smaller in size, is only 89 pages long. Pelletier in the preface admits that he has expanded the work (it here contains nearly twice the number of pages). Since we do not think that this edition calls for plates, and all three plates here are mounted on blank sheets and inserted, this is probaly a Grangerized copy. The frontis is of a gorgeously ruffed, bejewelled but definitely battle-axe lady, the next plate is of the Queen walking in the countryside with Parry holding a dagger in one hand and the Pope's absolution in the other titled "Parry not able to kill the Queen" - in the background is a scaffold with a man hanging with the legend "Deus vindex". The last plate is a portrait of Robert Dudley Earl of Leicester in ruff and armour and plumed hat.
