Marriage, Whoredom, and Fornication, Adultery, Polygamy, Divorce; With Many other Incidental Matters; .. In Two Volumes
London, Dodsley 1st first edition 1780 . Two Volumes octavo 19th century half calf with 5 faux raised bands gilt and tan title labels (tips slightly rubbed) xxxiv +412pp (ii)+432pp +[208]pp of index for both volumes. Titlepage of first volume is damp marked and the following three leaves of dedication and the last 8 leaves marginally so. The last two leaves also slightly browned but all paper supple and strong. There is sporadic & pale marking with volume 2 having a marginal ink spot to pp311 sl.offset to 310 and marginal damp to approx 10 leaves + the index. Ownership E.Kensington and note to pastedown that it was given my Mrs Bell in remembrance of her husband. *Madan was a loose-living lawyer when he attended a service by John Wesley, this led to his reform and he became a convert and took holy orders serving as chaplain of a Charity - Lock Hospital. He sympathized with the Lady Huntingdon and George Whitfield faction of Methodism but after 30 years this very controversial work advocating Polygamy - this led to a furore. Madan argues that monogamy can be harmful to women and his descriptions of the suffering of women under monogamy provoked charges of blasphemy. The work was in fact an important argument in the evolution of the legal rights of women for which the author had to resign his living and retire into private life. Scarce and rare first edition of a controversial book.

Franckfort am Mayn (ie Frankfurt), Sigmund Feyrabend Buchhandler 1580 Large scene of knight in armour on titlepage + full-page allegorical plate of three graces and flying Mercury signed I A [Jost Amman] & MF +156 full-page woodcuts of men in armour with . Folio in morocco spined boards (tips bit worn). Title in red & black + 2pp (preface and intro) + captioned full page plate as half title (numbered p3) +4-162pp +[2]pp (colophon with large printer's emblem and blank verso), but seems to lack a final blank leaf. At page 55 is a full-page half title with over 30 figures while at page 103 and 145 are divisional titles with large decorative tailpieces. This divides the men in armour into 4 parts and the last plate in each section has a monogram CW for Christoph Weiditz. Generally a very clean crisp copy, except for light browning of titlepage, final blank and a few other leaves, small brown marks on last page not affecting colophon, and light marks of former damp in top margin of a few pages. An early owner has written some 20 of the familial names in neat script above the ornate gothic printed names. The pages have good margins and strong impressions of these fine plates. Examples of the many famous families depicted are members of the Fugger, Pfister, Sattelin, Vogelin, Ravenspurger families. Coat of arms bookplate of Fr. Franc. Paul de Smitmer dated 1770 to pastedown + a later small name Gzell and partial date to flyleaf (see Fairfax Murray 49, Brunet I,235). *All 156 full-page woodcuts by CW (Christoph Weiditz 1498-1559) appeared in the earlier work cited by Brunet, "Bericht und antzaigen der loblichen Statt Augspurg aller Herren Geschlecht" (Augsburg 1550) which was edited by Paul Hector Mair. Mair was an Augsburg civil servant, active in martial arts, who lived beyond his means. Convicted of embezzlement, he was hanged in 1579 at the age of 62. The Gesclechter Buch was published in Frankfurt the following year, with the woodcuts used by Mair 30 years earlier. It repeats the words of his 1550 introduction but does not name him.

Lugduni (Lyon), Anissonios, Joan.Posuel & Claud.Rigaud 1689 Large woodcut of ornate fleur-de-lys in scrolled frame with cherub supporters (repeated) + some foliated head and tailpieces + many printers devices as decorative divisions. . Folio newer tooled roan on 4 raised bands (tips rubbed/sl.marked) Titlepage in red and black +[18] =dedication, to the reader & indices 1026pp +[8p] indices of places/things etc. with a second titlepage to TUBA SACERDOTALIS DEMOLIENS MUROS SEPTEM JERICHO with repeated printers mark but page in black only at p[697/8]. Entirely complete except for blanks at end. The first titlepage has a monastic stamp in the margin and outer margin is tatty and repaired without loss of print. The next six prelim. leaves are also slightly tatty or repaired, at the margin and similarly at the end (in the index) however none of this affects any printed areas. There are some creases to pages and about 6 with light ink spots [clearly blotted up as they are pale] A marginal damp mark affects about two dozen leaves in all in the middle, the book is otherwise clean and square. *By a Belgian theologian, the work was very popular giving advice on how to live, the various sins explained and graded as to severity, the sacraments explained and how to pray. A large book, in good condition, text in two columns with side notes giving biblical references but not that easy to come by.

Amsterdam, Isaac vander Putte 1740 Woodcut frontispiece with death & a necromancer holding the mirror, below is a Dutch city + 22 half page woodcuts + each of 4 titlepages has a different figural woodcut + a few nice head- & tail-pieces and a nice initial. Small octavo laced through full vellum, spine titled in ink (1" splits to foot of spine). Four Parts in one Volume. Frontis + printed titlepage + prelims all unnumbered but within the pagination 144pp; titlepage within pagination 112pp; [8]pp pictorial titlepage +contents +56pp; titlepage with poem on back +206pp. The woodcuts are charmingly primitive scenes of love, duels & murder and at least 5 of them have the figure of Death coming for the protagonist as in the earlier dances of death. Partly in verse, partly in dialogue and part in biblical texts the printer has used black letter, italic and ordinary typefaces, in double column, single column, double and single spacing and various sizes of type. Highly moral it also includes murder, love interest and mayham as well as edifying verse collected from many sources. Dutch text throughout. Some signs of use with minor edge browning and 2 gatherings a bit proud. *An amusing compilation of folk themes which made it quite popular in the 18th century (Waller 1173 for a later edition).

MILTON,JOHN
PRO POPULO ANGLICANO DEFENSIO contra Claudii anonymi, alias Salmasii, Defensionem Regiam ..
London, DuGardianis 1652 Commonwealth Coat of Arms on Titlepage. . Duodecimo contemporary calf blind ruled & floral corner ornaments (very worn to top edge & corners, spine in need of a reback though covers held firmly by vellum cords) 192pp (A-H8) Titlepage with signature of Amos A Laurence, Boston 1845 and by another hand "given to his son Rev. Wm. Laurence" (William Lawrence was Bishop of the Episcopal Church for Massachusetts). No other marks/writing and crisp and clean with the final blank. Although the imprint is given as London, and by the London publisher Du Gardianis, this was most probably a surreptitious imprint printed on the continent by the Elzevirs and has the typical miniscule italic type here used for the Preface. The work, commissioned by the Commonwealth Council, was aimed primarily at the continental educated classes especially those of the United Provinces in answer to "Defensio Regia pro Carolo I" by the French protestant Claude de Saumaise (or Salmasius) who was comissioned by the exiled Charles II to write a memorial to the reign of Charles I and an attack on Parliament for its execution of a King (carried out in the previous year). The Commonwealth rightly perceived the tract to be a threat to the reputation of the regime and ordered Milton to publish this rebuttal as he was the Secretary for Foreign Tongues to the Council of State. Milton spent most of 1650 on this repsonse. His energies and eyesight, what remained of it, were destroyed by this labour. See also our copy of the Defensio Regia (V70275).

Art Nouveau bookplate of Haut on pastedown and slightly faded name at top margin of title. Endpapers earlier than the rebinding, as they and the first few preliminaries have matching worming but all but one single hole have disappeared by the first page of text. The last two leaves of the end of the second item have one worm hole in the gutter margin. There is some foxing & browning but the paper is supple and strong and entirely readable and there are no tears or signs of use. *This is the second Latin translation of Pascale's work written to defend the Jansenists from the attacks of the Jesuits and which has the additional Theses bound in. As with the French edition, so also this Latin translation of Pascal's was condemned by Pope Alexander the seventh and supposed to be Publicly burnt. It was psudonymously translated from the French into Latin for wider dissemination at Port-Royal (ee also PRINTING AND THE MIND OF MAN 140).
