Four Volumes in One, large folio bound in blind-stamped pigskin (dated 1564 with initials I.D.F.H.) on bevelled wooden boards with metal clasps (lacking one clasp) each board has 16 small marginal panels of biblical scenes and four larger central stamps of Justice, Fortitude etc with legends under each, spine on four raised double bands with MS title and shelf mark "Basilius 39", some small worm holes, tips worn. Title page + catalogue +[6] +787pp with colophon "Basiliae apud Hier. Frobenium et Nic. Episcopium anno M.D.LI" (1551) +[21]pp index +[3]pp blank with large Froben device on last page. Bookplate with coronet initials dated 1913, inscription "Ex bibliotheca Johannis Mathon Lugd. Bat." with MS devices on free endpaper & another inscription on titlepage. Collated complete (&4, a-z, A-M6, N8, O-Z, Aa-Ss6, Tt8, Vv-Xx6) with pagination continuous, each of 4 vols has divisional titlepage (see Adams B340). Crisp and clean throughout but with quite extensive worming of pages near front and back of book. *NB large heavy book, so extra shipping/postage costs.

Two Volumes octavo calf with 5 raised bands with spine labels in contrasting color to both volumes gilt double rules to covers (tips worn/hinges cracked but covers attached/some scuffing) [16]pp Title & prelims 432pp +[8]pp Titlepage to second volume +contents +395p +[1]p booklist. Second volume with marginal brown stain up to p24 else both volumes crisp and clean and V.G. *A critic of Locke and Berkeley, Baxter was a private tutor, and this book was written for the benefit of his pupils - an interesting glimpse into the teaching methods and curriculum of the 18th century gentleman. It was first printed in Latin in 1738 in a much abreviated form here it has been much enlarged by Baxter.Based on Newton it achieved great popularity.

Carruthers, Lancaster & D. Collier). Added illustrated title pages ("SCOTLAND, by William Beattie, M.D."), Vol 1 viii +[2] +200 +[2]pp, Vol 2 [6] +172pp. Light edge-browning to most plates with darker water-staining to edges of some (notably towards end Vol 2), but no damage to printed area of plates or to text. Overall condition of both vols Good. *Beautiful engravings of Scottish scenery throughout by well-known artists.

Half title +title +[iii]-x +281pp; Half title to vol.2 + title +294pp. *A novel in letters (and conversations) first published in 1782 with this being a later set, neat and tight with pretty vignette to each titlepage & dividing decorated lines between each of the 175 letters. There is a rough translation of this work on the internet. A Neat printing on laid paper THIS IS NOT A MODERN FACSIMILE.

Half title +frontis portrait +titlepage with naval emblem +[26]pp +xix +480pp; half title + titlepage with naval emblem + [2]pp +747pp. Vol. I with variable foxing/browning esp. to beginning & end, possibly missing plate of De Witt at p189, 2 plates with clean tears without loss. *The plates and even the wood engravings are full of life and action, many naval battles, scenes of travel, family and state occaisions. A very full and successful life of the famous Dutch Admiral.

Duodecimo mottled calf (hinges cracked and covers held by cords/tips worn/Blindstamp of the Society for Christian Knowledge) 159pp some browning/staining to first pages of each story. Early library label on FEP. Half title present but lacks most of one of two free rear end papers. *First and last stories are followed by factual matter, in the case of the Poacher by extracts of Parliamentary law in the case of Parish Matters by several extracts from Benjamin Franklin's letters and works.

Blackie and Co., Printers, Villafield. 1862 500 + engravings, colour maps. . Quarto, Volumes I and II of III, several maps with colour (including a fine one of Indian subcontinent); tissue guard on frontis; 10" tall; heavy wear to edges and spine. Decolouration on covers of both volumes, particular wear to edges of Vol I. Pagination excellent in both volumes however, despite some minor wear to edges. *Vol I and II chart the history of India from the first landings by European Merchants to the Indian Rebellion of 1857. Vol I ends with Clive of India's conquest of the subcontinent. Henry Beveridge was a prominent Scottish Calvinist who made a career translating the works of Calvin, he published this history of India without ever visiting. His son however was a notable figure in the Indian Civil Service, and his grandson was the prominent Liberal MP William Beveridge.

Marbled boards to covers (edges worn), frontis + engraved title + printed title +[2]pp Preface +298pp; Vol 2 299-408pp + [4]pp index + "History of London Part I" 171pp +Part II 76pp. Three plates with creases and some fingering and signs of use and about half a dozen pages with some foxing. A few pages at beginning have marginal damp marks, and a few gatherings of text pages are uniformly tanned, but all pages well attached, and the paper supple. Quality of engravings very good and the plates are delightful: full of people, carriages etc depicting appearance of London vividly at that time.

Duodecimo original vellum (repaired at edges) Titlepage with approbation on back +[10]pp to reader +[8]pp contents +652pp. Title page with two faint ownerships dated 1706 and 1761 fly leaf with E.Bertin (pretre) and also Gervais. About a dozen pages with marginal worm track disappearing into a single marginal hole, one marginal tear without loss and the last page with small cut corner no loss to printed area. *A practical marriage guide laid out in short pity advice and interspersed with short stories from examples including historical unhappy marriages of saints. The author seems to have been slightly unusual in Jesuit circles in having also written another practical book advising that buckling down to work with your hands is also a way to salvation.

Some creases to titlepage and margin of one other leaf else exceptionally clean and crisp. *Sebastian Bloss was Professor of Medicine at Heidelberg in 1584, later at Ulm and finally in Tuebingen where he died.His most famous work was on the plague. Scarce - only 3 copies in German libraries none in the UK,but not in GM, Durling, Waller, Wheeler or Wellcome.
