Mulgrave, (John Sheffield) Earl of Mulgrave
AN ESSAY ON POETRY
London, H. Hills, in Black-fryars, near the Water-side 1709 . Octavo (17.5x11cm) disbound titlepage with first word of title just at top edge of page as are parentheses of next page number (3) but neither is actually cropped, other margins are all present. Titlepage with 4 printers's ornaments between 2 ruled lines, 16 pages. Usual slight browning else neat. An Essay Upon Poetry is written in couplets and describes the main forms of poetry - songs, elegies, odes, satyr [ie satire] and plays in that order. Misprint on page 10 is corrected in margin in ink {neat and not recent]. *Sheffield led an adventurous life starting in the navy, often in trouble, both in politics and out of favour. Pope admired this Essay and although often attributed to Drydan (it appeared in his collected works) Dryden may actually have had some minor contributions to the poem it is now firmly acknowledged to be Sheffield's work. TWO DISSERTATIONS I. On the GRAECIAN MYTHOLOGY II. AN EXAMINATION OF SIR ISAAC NEWTON'S OBJECTIONS to the Chronology of the Olympiads.
London, Printed by J. Nichols 1782 . Octavo contemporary roan gilt (rebacked with half of old spine leather laid on including most of spine label/corners worn). Titlepage +advert leaf +xxii (subscriber list) +half title +231pp. Victorian Institution label to pastedown with rules for the library's use. *The first edition published after the death of the author to benefit his widow including many Large paper copies including such for Dr.Johnson, Sir Josshua Reynolds, Sir Joseph Banks and others. The second of these treatises seeks to refute Isaac Newton's argument that peoples tend to exagerate the antiquity of their origins as a matter of vanity and thus falsified their chronology. He belived that the Greeks did this with the origin of the Olympiads. Musgrave in this disseration works through the victors of the Olympic games to give a different chronology that actually seems to push the first Olympiad to an even earlier period.
