Folio (36x22cm), 2 Works bound together in 1 volume, contemporary full leather, spine on 6 cords with elaborate gilt tooling & leather title label, floral gilt edges (small loss at head of spine, tips bumped). First Work [4], 15, [5], 82, [2], 20pp + LIV, VII leaves of plates + text illustrations & diagrams. TP in red & black with coat-of-arms, small hole & loss of text (repaired from back), occasional water staining, including the plates. 2nd Work (OPERA POSTHUMA) with engraved portrait of Malpighi, TP in red & black, [24], 334, [2]pp., XIX, [1] leaves of plates, illustrated frontis bound at end. 1st Work LACKS leaf 1 (intaglio frontis + license), otherwise both Works collated complete. *Malpighi was called the "Founder of microscopical anatomy, histology & Father of physiology and embryology". In his autobiography, Malpighi himself described the 1st Work here, published by the Royal Society, as "the most elegant format in the whole literate world".

David" and the other title "Ezekiel . 8vo contemporary leather on 4 raised bands [repaired to head of spine & along front hinge/ corners worn] Rare Imprimatur leaf surrounded by printer's ornaments, faces the titlepage with the large burning ship emblem +2 plates facing each other of King David + Ezekiel + Epistle to Mr. Garthwait signed: H.E.+ Preface +Contents THUS total prelims ={24pp} + 452pp Printed the year after the first edition by the same printer. Two names to the titlepage and one repeated on the margin of the imprimatur leaf. Some small marginal bookworm tracks to lower margin at gutter never affecting any printed area a few pale stains to approx. sic leaves and the usual edge dusting for a book of this age.A few corners creased but paper in supple strong conditon and all pages well centered so no headlines or fore-edges close cropped. The unacknowledged author of the epistle writes that he is hesitant to publish the book at this"present disturbed state of affairs" and "late great calamity" [* the Great Fire of London] people are, he thinks, more likely to heed its help in times of trouble!

Two Works in One small quarto 183x140mm rebound in full brown levant on 4 raised bands with 2 black spine labels gilt and gilt date to foot of spine. Newer edpapers, small bookplate of Alan John Jarvis, [iv]+20pp; [vi]+126+[4]pp Table. Long ownership inscription on back of titlepage (John Thomas 1751) with name repeated at end of 1st work, John Davies on back of 2nd titlepage with a few ink notes by both owners in margins of later pages. Paper browned throughout, edges frayed and cropped at top at end of book.

Venice, Hieronymum Francinum 1588 MDLXXXVIII There are 87 text illustrations mainly of architecture, sculpture etc. . Octavo Bound in an illuminated vellum manuscript binding partly from a larger sheet. Titlepage with a large illustration and the legend "Alma Roma" below. Verso of this page is blank but facing this are 6 leaves without numbers. Leaves 1 to 176 are followed by 8 index leaves. Many of the foreegoing illustrations take up almost half of each page and Facing page 173 is a full-page illustration showing Sacrificial and other antiquities in 12 compartments. There is some browning of the titlepage, the following leaf has a purple catalogue number, an inked date [1588] and a three-word faded name all within the margins. There are printed side-notes throughout as well as 12 pages with extra ink marginal notes as well as a few small underlinings. There are 5 partially coloured illustrations and 3 ink spattered pages. The verso of the last index page has many inscriptions, names and crossings-out with a greyish background.

Inscription of previous owner on title page, followed by translators preface. * A novella of the Byzantine/Roman General Belisarius, whom Justinian tasked with reconquering the western empire in 533 AD. Belisarius despite his successes is reduced to poverty by Justinian, serving as an apocraphal tale and an allegory for the arrogance of contemporary French King Louis XV. A notable chapter in this book promoting religious tolerance incured the censure of the Archbishop of Paris. Marmontel gained the patronage of Madame de Pompadour and fled Paris following the revolution.

Folio leather-spined embossed cloth gilt on bevelled boards (rebacked tips slightly worn spine gilt darkened & dulled) All Edges Gilt. Unique gilt and illuminated chromoliths inserted into sunken card mounts back to back. Double pages except for the final plate which is printed on the front (recto) only. Slight foxing to mounts but clean and lovely. *A lavish production in high Victorian style with central texts with large illuminated first capital letter and other ornaments surrounded by decorative frame. A wide shaped border incorporating a pictorial miniature then decorates the page with floral emblems of vines and trellises in a stunning background of colors. *Based on the idea of a mediaeval illuminated page displaying the virtuosity of Victorian chromo-lithography as beautifully executed by Day & Son. Quite difficult to find, this is a stunning early gift book.

With the inclusion of "A panegyre: containing the life and heroyck deeds of the most Christian King Henry the fourth" [this is a caption title of a translation by Josuah Sylvester from an unknown source and it with a new pagination but a continuous signature. It also contains "The Tropheis of the life and tragaedie of the death of ... Henry the Great ... Translated .. by Ios. Syl."[=Josuah Sylvester] in verse.

Four voyages include journal of an employee of the North Sea Company of Copenhagen, the Jesuits Le Compte & Du Halde in China, Sir John Chardin travelling into Persia and finally John Thevenot from Italy to Constantinople. Some minor foxing, mostly to the plates but a neat tight copy of one of the 25 volumes making up the set, perhaps the most interesting volume in the set.

Portrait of the author + titlepge in frame of printers' ornaments. . 16mo marbled leather with gilt rules to compartmentalize the spine with red gilt title label and gilt dentelles [edges + head & foot of spine somewhat worn] Frontispiece + titlepage + 216pp The top margin is often cut short affecting the running headline and the page numbers but none of this affects the text which is complete as it has a blank line between headline and text which is never cropped. The paper is uniformly tanned and some 13 leaves have old marginal ink notations or corrections some with show-through to other side of leaf. There is also some minor ink spattering and some dusting but all text is quite neat and entirely legible. May wrote this first in Latin, translated it himself into English in 1650. This is the second edition and there were several more down to the late 1680's. It is An early review of the causes of the civil war from its beginnings to the end of the second war and the reasons for the execution of Charles I. May proclaims a cause of the conflict to be Archbishop Laud`s sympathy for Catholicisim. May also recounts the history of the conflict, noting such battles as Naseby and Torrington. A long term parlimanterian, after his death May was buried in Westminster Abbey, he was exhumed following the restoration.

Amsterdam, Isaac vander Putte 1740 Woodcut frontispiece with death & a necromancer holding the mirror, below is a Dutch city + 22 half page woodcuts + each of 4 titlepages has a different figural woodcut + a few nice head- & tail-pieces and a nice initial. Small octavo laced through full vellum, spine titled in ink (1" splits to foot of spine). Four Parts in one Volume. Frontis + printed titlepage + prelims all unnumbered but within the pagination 144pp; titlepage within pagination 112pp; [8]pp pictorial titlepage +contents +56pp; titlepage with poem on back +206pp. The woodcuts are charmingly primitive scenes of love, duels & murder and at least 5 of them have the figure of Death coming for the protagonist as in the earlier dances of death. Partly in verse, partly in dialogue and part in biblical texts the printer has used black letter, italic and ordinary typefaces, in double column, single column, double and single spacing and various sizes of type. Highly moral it also includes murder, love interest and mayham as well as edifying verse collected from many sources. Dutch text throughout. Some signs of use with minor edge browning and 2 gatherings a bit proud. *An amusing compilation of folk themes which made it quite popular in the 18th century (Waller 1173 for a later edition).

LACKS 4 text leaves (pp 217-24) - the missing 3 plates and 4 text leaves in colour facsimile reproduced from the 1904 reprint, bound in to match. One gathering with edges browned, some offsetting from plates to text, otherwise clean and crisp throughout. *Beautiful bright hand-coloured plates of hunting, shooting, tandem-driving, livestock etc. Very rare in original edition (Schwerdt II p.212 "the first and only edition of a rare and valuable magazine"). This is the original 1822 edition, not the more common reprint published in 1904.

Engraved title +Printed title with woodcut printer's mark Apollo & Pegasus in a landscape +[12]pp +392pp +[6]pp index & blank. Nice name C.? Michaelis to blank area of printed title. *This is the first Latin translation by the medical student Abraham Blasius of the 'Heel-en Geneeskonstige Aanmerkingen' of the Dutch physician Job van Meek'ren, illustrated by cases from his own patients. Four leaves have 2mmx10mm paper faults to fore edge and 8 leaves with marginal damp mark not touching text. An entire and particularly crisp clean copy with good margins, strong paper and no underlining/marginalia of these well illustrated medical observations.
