Lovisino, Marco Antonio
ESPOSITIONE DELL'XI ET XII CAP. DEL IIII LIB. D'ESDRA: sopra gli accidenti passati, presenti, & futuri della revolutione del grande & tremendo Imperio dell'Aquila: Quarta,& ultima Monarchia nel Mondo. .. In Venetia .. Matheo Boselli 1571
Venice ITALY, Matthew Boselli 1st first edition 1571 Woodcuts inc. small map of Constantinople (57) with repeats + printer's mark of bull riden by Roman soldier + 3 historiated large capitals (Penelope weaving, Sampson's hair being cut, maid chased by sol. Quarto (21.5x15.5cm) neatly rebound in newer vellum ([4]+92+[12] leaves), titlepage remargined to top corner (no loss of text and only about 1cm loss to corner paper), lower corner with similar loss not repaired. Faint oval ownership stamp, corner loss to 1st few leaves nowhere near text, minor edge browning/foxing & some irregular page tanning becoming stronger towards end with last 4 leaves of index browned and with some marginal erosion, only last leaf has some loss to page numbers and a few initial letters, neatly repaired. *A curious work with much occult & apocalyptic content (see M. Reeves, The influence of prophecy in the later Middle Ages, Oxford Clarendon Press 1969, passim). The woodcuts show mythical beasts with multiple heads, bears eating kings, Babylonian whore riding a multiheaded beast etc with symbolic lettering & other cryptic messages. Brunet III, 1190 calls this "A unique work, rare and almost unknown. Following Esra and other Biblical prophets, the author warns of the coming invasion of the Turks into all the countries of Europe." Lovisino seeks to ridcule Islam, depicting a beast with the body of the Prophet. This first and probably only edition was published in the same year as the Ottoman defeat at Lepanto, which heralded a decline in successful Ottoman conquests in Europe (Referenced by Adams L1539).

Marriage, Whoredom, and Fornication, Adultery, Polygamy, Divorce; With Many other Incidental Matters; .. In Two Volumes
London, Dodsley 1st first edition 1780 . Two Volumes octavo 19th century half calf with 5 faux raised bands gilt and tan title labels (tips slightly rubbed) xxxiv +412pp (ii)+432pp +[208]pp of index for both volumes. Titlepage of first volume is damp marked and the following three leaves of dedication and the last 8 leaves marginally so. The last two leaves also slightly browned but all paper supple and strong. There is sporadic & pale marking with volume 2 having a marginal ink spot to pp311 sl.offset to 310 and marginal damp to approx 10 leaves + the index. Ownership E.Kensington and note to pastedown that it was given my Mrs Bell in remembrance of her husband. *Madan was a loose-living lawyer when he attended a service by John Wesley, this led to his reform and he became a convert and took holy orders serving as chaplain of a Charity - Lock Hospital. He sympathized with the Lady Huntingdon and George Whitfield faction of Methodism but after 30 years this very controversial work advocating Polygamy - this led to a furore. Madan argues that monogamy can be harmful to women and his descriptions of the suffering of women under monogamy provoked charges of blasphemy. The work was in fact an important argument in the evolution of the legal rights of women for which the author had to resign his living and retire into private life. Scarce and rare first edition of a controversial book.

Franckfort am Mayn (ie Frankfurt), Sigmund Feyrabend Buchhandler 1580 Large scene of knight in armour on titlepage + full-page allegorical plate of three graces and flying Mercury signed I A [Jost Amman] & MF +156 full-page woodcuts of men in armour with . Folio in morocco spined boards (tips bit worn). Title in red & black + 2pp (preface and intro) + captioned full page plate as half title (numbered p3) +4-162pp +[2]pp (colophon with large printer's emblem and blank verso), but seems to lack a final blank leaf. At page 55 is a full-page half title with over 30 figures while at page 103 and 145 are divisional titles with large decorative tailpieces. This divides the men in armour into 4 parts and the last plate in each section has a monogram CW for Christoph Weiditz. Generally a very clean crisp copy, except for light browning of titlepage, final blank and a few other leaves, small brown marks on last page not affecting colophon, and light marks of former damp in top margin of a few pages. An early owner has written some 20 of the familial names in neat script above the ornate gothic printed names. The pages have good margins and strong impressions of these fine plates. Examples of the many famous families depicted are members of the Fugger, Pfister, Sattelin, Vogelin, Ravenspurger families. Coat of arms bookplate of Fr. Franc. Paul de Smitmer dated 1770 to pastedown + a later small name Gzell and partial date to flyleaf (see Fairfax Murray 49, Brunet I,235). *All 156 full-page woodcuts by CW (Christoph Weiditz 1498-1559) appeared in the earlier work cited by Brunet, "Bericht und antzaigen der loblichen Statt Augspurg aller Herren Geschlecht" (Augsburg 1550) which was edited by Paul Hector Mair. Mair was an Augsburg civil servant, active in martial arts, who lived beyond his means. Convicted of embezzlement, he was hanged in 1579 at the age of 62. The Gesclechter Buch was published in Frankfurt the following year, with the woodcuts used by Mair 30 years earlier. It repeats the words of his 1550 introduction but does not name him.
