The plates are mostly not counted in the pagination but 7 in each volume are printed on the recto or verso of a text page and within the page numbering. The first dozen leaves including the free endpaper have some worming to one centimeter in the lower gutter margin but this never encroaches on the printed area and otherwise this set is clean and crisp, a little bit of off setting from the plates and no foxing. This set has more illustrations than found elsewhwere, the usual number seems to be 40 illustrations with Some of the engravings printed on pages within the signatures and others on plates as with our set. Written while Leti was in England it was later translated into German and French but seemingly never into English, Leti was often critised for "inexactitude".

Longueville, Peter
THE HERMIT OR THE UNPARELLELED SUFFERINGS and surprising adventures of Mr. Philip Quarll, an Englishman who was lately discovered by Mr. Dorrington a Bristol merchant, upon an uninhabited island in the South Sea where he has lived above fifty years.
London, H.Fenwick No. 143, Cheapside fifth edition 1775 but not here dated Engraved frontis "Philip Quarll & Beaufidell" + "Map of the Island Drawn by Philip Quarle" [sic] + woodcut head- & tail-pieces. . 18mo [145x85mm] tan leather with black embossed coat of arms to cover. Spine gilt ruled on 5 raised bands + a red gilt spine-label, hinges split but covers well attached, edges worn, spine edges chipped, viii + 262pp. Four marginal tears without loss + 1 with three letters missing but pencilled in. About 8 openings with some off-setting from one side to the other but stil quite readable. The only copy matching ours is listed in the English Short Title Catalogue [not in WorldCat] The pubisher was only at Cheapside during 2 years [1774-1775] and the only citation on EST is N17619. We have noted that the J.Wren edition calls for an island plate. Purporting to be by Edward Dorrington the book is in fact by Peter Longueville though sometimes also attributed to Alexander Bicknell the story is most likely to have been based on Robinson Crusoe. Our frontispiece shows Quarll and Beaufidell who is a monkey-like creature that seems to be his servant. Three houses and 6 animals in background plus a fenced area and a castle-like ruin on moutains above. Quarll's story begins from his birth in St.Giles tells how he was apprenticed to a locksmith which was quite convenient as he next joined up with a house-breaker who was later hanged. Philip then went to sea later became a singing master and married three wives. Condemned but then pardoned by King Charles II he became a merchant and was shipwrecked off the coast of Mexico. He lived for more than 50 years alone and when found by Dorrington refused to leave the island.
