The last chapter is the opening part of Shaw's travels through Barbary. Part of a series of voyages and discovery volumes for children collected for the charming plates which are correct for this volume.

This is one of the most interesting volumes on America in this series of early childrens book on exploration with all the charming required plates and a fine map.

Folio (in 4's) near Contemporary English sprinked calf with blind ruled & one decor roll on 5 raised bands with burgandy gilt label (tips sl.worn/head of spine bit worn but very neat original state) Red sprinkled edges TP (2p)+737pp + (1p)=blank) +(22p)=index. About a dozen corners torn away but never near to the text, else unmarked and clean. An interesting Scottish perspective on English history by a Edinburgh scholar who came to London after the Scottish King James VI became James I of England. Deals also with Irish affairs and affairs on the continent. With an Evelyn book label to pastedown this is a lovely crisp copy.

All Edges Rouge, fine marbled end-papers, LIVpp (1752 Title in red & black + Preface) + xii errata +[2]pp +819pp (pagination continuous except after p364 2nd Title 1748 printed like 1st in red & black) +[1]p Approbation (naming author Sieur Joly, Chanoine de la Chapelle-au-Riche de Dijon). Folio pages beautifully crisp, clean and un-foxed throughout. *Extensive commentary by French Catholic Joly, on the Historical and Critical Dictionary of Huguenot Protestant Pierre Bayle (1647-1706). Bayle's first French encyclopedia was tolerant in religion and a major influence on 18th century Enlightenment. Here the Preface explains that Joly had two main objects - to correct Bayle's perceived errors, and supplement his omissions. So this work made an influential contribution in its own right to religious debate and knowledge, 50 years after Bayle's first publication. NB extra shipping cost for large folio weighing 4.5Kg.

Attached is a "secret history of Whitehall" which chronichals the events following the Glorius Revolution in 1688, through a serious of letters between eminent political figures of the time, including the former James II.

Venice, Raynaldus de Noviomago 1481 Coloured fine pen-line 3 colour initials with gutter decoration and lower margin ditto. . Folio later half vellum with gilt coloured leather labels marbled sides, armorial bookplate on pastedown "Wm. Read" RED & BLUE INITIALS throughout with a few decorations and tails, minor contempory annotations throughout. Contemporary marginalia a2-10 b8-o8+p5 collates as Bodleian copy. This is the 5th edition of Rufinus Aquileiensis' translation, but the 1st Venetian edition. It was the first time all of Josephus`s translated works appeared in one volume, and all subsequent volumes offered only slight revisions of this text. *Book one (originally writen in AD 75) is Josephus`s account of the first Roman-Jewish war (AD 66-73), in which he fought against Rome until capture by the future emperor Vespasian. Book two (writen originally during Domitian`s reign in AD94)is a twenty volume work recounting the history of the Jews from the Hebrew Bible up to the aformentioned Roman-Jewish war. Both books are listed as among the most famous of Jewish historiography.

Fine early coloured armorial bookplate, with neat library shelf marks on pastedown and at top of title, lower gutter of first 24 leaves damaged by former damp nowhere affecting text, light damp mark at lower corner of final 5 leaves, pages else remarkably crisp and clean throughout. *Fine Froben typography and layout with large decorative initials after Holbein.

Three leaves with lower corner torn off and neat old repair with manuscript text supplied. Some worming, mainly marginal but 4 leaves just touching text and archivally repaired. A few marginal marks. A few pages with minor staining or foxing and the fore-edge and a few, less than a dozen, marginal markings. At the end of the second volume there is a pale damp tide mark but this has not caused the pages to be damaged, they are crisp and supple. Gilbert Genebrard was one of the foremost Hebrewists of the french renaissance. A really nice clean folio copy of the two Josephus works.

Basel [Switzerland], Ambrosium et Aurelium, Frobenios fratres Martio 1565 [see colophon in vol.3] Froben printer's woodcut to titlepage + full page Froben cadusus with bird on top of staff & hands holding staff below . folio full leather blindtooled on 5 raised bands {some splits to hinges but held by cords with top two compartments underlaid with old relaid and bottom compartment treated the same way/ some scuffs & some missing leather to edges] All Edges sprinkled in red. 348pp +279pp +[1p=blank] +190pp + [2pp=verses & errata] +68pp + 1 leaf with full page Froben printer's mark] Scarce with this large Froben leaf still present at the end. The title and semi titles to the subsequent 2 parts are counted in the Collation though not numbered themselves.The first titlepage has three old ink ownerships to top margin one crossed out and 3 monastary stamps to blank areas, one repeated to A2 another to the pastedown. The pastedown also has 2 neat shelf-marks. There is some dusting and spotting of the titlepage and some pale damp marks to gutter & margin but not affecting the strength or crispness of the paper and about 10 leaves with marginal small wormholes never touching printed area. There is no foxing, no underlinging or annotations and the paper is clean crisp and birght. This is the Latin edition and first translation by Langum and has some greek as well as italic typography with side notes. There are also some handsome figural and decorative initial letters, in all a good tight copy. Justinus one of the earliest Christian philosophers studied the Stoics, Pythagoreans, Aristotle and Plato. He preceded the other early christians such as Eusebius and Boethius who also were interested in combining Christianity with Attic philosophy and this lead to his martyrdom as a Christian 165 A.D.

A leaf of text accompanies each map, those for Octodurus + Pons in Rheno which lack the maps have also had the text removed. Three maps have been cut down to the plate mark and mounted professionally, a few others have slightly rough edges. *The text is condensed from the results of latest researches and examined in the light of the French Military Staff maps of the regions.
