Small quarto plum roan spine extra gilt compartments & faux bands with cloth sides (tips a bit worn/rebacked with old spine relaid/cloth rubbed). Portrait Frontis +hand coloured titlepage +printed titlepage +Portrait +xxiii [1]p blank +312pp. Text pages with some foxing, more so to first & last pages. Plates mostly clean & white but a few have pale edge foxing. Two tissue guards torn, one at p17 lost. The plates are all beautifully hand coloured and heightened with gum.

Stains/rear cover buckled & leather holes However covers well attached and hinges firm so useable but not beautiful] We lack frontispiece and titlepage and one other plate . Starts *2 with dedication to the king [28p incl.dedication + avertissement +contents] +369pp Fin du Tome I [The End of Volume One] We lack Vol.2 which has only two, or depending on edition, three plates] Paper tanned and with some tide marks but paper is supple and all pages tightly bound and very legible.There is an early name to margin of first dedication page, else no marginalia or underlinging. An interesting early account of Jesuits writing letters from China to Europe about the conditions in China in the 17th century with the first volume having many more plates than the other volume. Sets are always priced well over £1000.

It includes FIREARMS with plates of revolvers, MEDICAL equipment and artifical limbs, Clothes incl.bustles, hoops, umbrellas, marvelously impractical "Apparatus for walking on water", household Gadgets eg. sewing machines, even a "rotary blast producing chair", Navigational improvements, shoemaking, various RR seats that turn into couchettes, everything is here.

Octavo contemporary half calf marbled boards, spine gilt with coronet letter B[ateman] (front board reattached, tips bumped, spine label missing). LAST WILL complete 24pp; MEMOIRS xvi (Dedication & Preface lacking A1=Title) +112pp (Part I) +152[of 156]pp (Part II). Modern Ex Libris "The Play's the Thing" of the dramatist Ifan Kyrle Fletcher; near-contemporary ownership "Lord Bateman" (as initial with coronet on spine) and name Bateman (cropped) on Title of Will, which with following leaf A2 has some edge loss (repaired) not affecting text. The Memoirs lack the portrait by Vander Gucht as well as the title and last 2 leaves, but text is otherwise clean crisp and complete. *The full title of the main work is "Memoirs of the life, writings, and amours of William Congreve Esq. interspersed with miscellaneous essays, letters and characters written by him, also some very curious memoirs of Mr Dryden and his family ... by Mr. Congreve. Compiled from their respective originals, by Charles Wilson". Straus, The Unspeakable Curll, suggests Oldmixon as author. Like the Trinity College Dublin copy, this contains Congreve's life in two parts preceded by the second edition of his will with separate title-page. Scarce.

Leiden (but actually Brussels), Jean Sambyx (Francois Foppens) 1663 . 24mo contemporary roan blind ruled (neat old reback/tips worn) 142pp +[2p] +46pp includes two un-numbered half titles in the foliation + a final blank. A-H12. The printer's mark is the amillary sphere (of Foppens?) *To page 93 are the love affairs & from thence to 142 are the letters written to the Duchess de Beaufort & the Marchioness de Vernueil extracted from the originals found after the death of Mademoiselle d'Estoges. The final 46 pages are a selection of good deeds and memorable sayings of the King. A very neat crisp copy and the date is 1663 (as MDCLXIII) although it is thought that 1664 is the first dated edition.

Duodecimo speckled roan red title label spine decorated with lyre designs between decorated rules & gilt panel to covers (tips rubbed) [10] + 300pp. Early initials G.A. at top of title, ownership John Haynes 1692 crossed out in margin of Contents, a few marginal worm holes, mainly to sign.C but none touching the print. *Original edition was Nouveau traite´ de la civilite´ (Paris 1671) by Antoine de Courtin. Neat handsome copy of an early well arranged translation from the French to include everything from eating to letter writing, from dancing to conversation, about neatness and all behaviour towards speriors and inferiors (referenced ESTC R14935).

Nurnberg Germany, Peter Conrad Monath 1721 full page copperplates [13 including frontispiece] of cherubs + oval pictorial titlepage vignette + engraved head- & tail-piece of cherubs among books + celebrating the harvest + 2 identical woodcut headpieces an. 8vo full brown leather [all edges very worn/spine & lower board has leather flaking but all 5 cords to both covers are in good condition and covers are securely attached to the spine] All edges gilt [gilt now tarnished] Frontis + titlepage in red and black with vignette + [8pp =to reader by George Pritius] + [4pp of Preface + half title leaf to Part I +1184pp + [56pp of 3 indeces.] Quite some signs of use to the preliminary leaves and the first pages however all pages are well bound in, with only 1 leaf with marginal tear not touching text, and no annotations or underlinings and no bookworming. The endpapers have 2 or 3 ownership inscriptions. The first four leaves have slight chipping to fore edge and are quite dusty and soiled to the edges and gatherings A-E have a narrow marginal tide-mark not affecting text. The margins of 4 of the plates have corners or other small tearouts repaired.

Full calf, raised bands with red contrasting leather labels (5 boards detached) leather covers and spines very worn with some loss; stitching of Vol.2 partly broken with some gatherings loose (without any loss or damage). Engraved heraldic Frontispiece - Portrait of Judge Croke in first two vols. (24)920(40); (24)700recte704(22) pgs.617-620 appear twice; (28)610(66)pages. Handsome & clear black-letter typography with printed side-notes throughout. English translation by Sir Harbottle Grimston, Croke's son-in-law, with some Latin and law-Fench text. Waterstaining throughout the volumes, varying from fairly heavy to very light; two marginal tears w/o loss, some old legal marginalia in pencil & in ink (the former could easily be erased but some is quite interesting). Tables of Cases and Indices to Legal Principles. *Sir George Croke (1560-1642) resisted Royal interference with the Courts, in the "Ship Money" tax case he spoke out boldly for Parliament's exclusive right to raise tax. Croke's "Reports" cover the period 1580-1640; Vol.3, which was published first, bears a fine Dedication to King Charles II (following the Restoration). *Though waterstained and showing signs of use by prior generations of lawyers, this copy is on strong crisp paper and worthy of professional binding repair.
