Valegio, Francesco (1560-1643?)
RACCOLTA DI LE PIU ILLUSTRI ET FAMOSE CITTA DI TUTTO IL MONDO
Venice, F. Valegio (according to BL) 1595 (acc. to BL) Engraved illustrated titlepage + 260 plates of cities/towns. . Oblong octavo (190x127mm) pocked dark calf, spine on 6 cords, compartments floral gilt (tips bumped, hinges tender & head/foot of spine chipped). FEP has neat MS shelfmark "No 30" and (in different hand) MS ownership note dated 1886. Engraved titlepage +260 plates of cities & towns ordered by region or country (all with wide margins, all undated except Constantinople, Rhodes & Algiers signed "Martinus Rota" & dated 1572). Most plates partly affected by light stains of former damp. *Valegio may have collected the plates which were engraved by Martin Rota in about 1580. Various other engravers contributed to the publication, but others were engraved by Valegio himself and, because of that, his name is usually associated with this work. The views & plans of principal cities & towns in Europe, Africa & Asia derive from those in the first 'city atlas', Braun & Hogenberg's Civitates Orbis Terrarum published in Cologne from 1572, which placed the plans in picturesque landscapes, often with costumed figures in the foreground, and these elements are also found here. Very rare (referenced by BM STC Italy p.547, Thieme-Becker xxxiv, p.71, Cremonini, Italia, n.10).

Vincent of Lerins, Saint (died circa 435) & Augustine, Saint (Bishop of Hippo)
Vincentii Lirinensis ADVERSUS PROFANAS omnium novitates haereticorum commonitorium. Cum notis V.C. Stephani Baluzii. Adjicitur S. Augustini LIBER DE HAERESIBUS.
Cambridge England, Printed John Hayes published William Graves (Bookselle) 1687 . Duodecimo (118x70mm) disbound lacking a1 which is a blank. Contains Titlepage within double ruled border + (68pp) of preface with errata + 2nd identical titlepage -verso blank +(10p) additional Preface with same errata as on C12 + 1-312p Is sometimes found without the first 68p preface, and in another variant with catchword on p269 Ste- when it leaves out p270-4 which is an Appendix. In our copy the catch word is Appen- and the Appendix is present starting on 270. The signatures are thus correct & as usual in 12's. The Saint Augustine begins on p169. The first TP has small tears but only affecting the outer of the two ruled borders it also has some uniform tanning. There are some early underlinings or marginal annotations else clean and square. *Little is know of St.Vincent, his work being far better known than his life. The Commonitorium stresses the importance of tradition and commonly understood practice in scriptural exegesis. He is, thus, opposed to the doctrine of St. Augustine. The Etienne Baluze commentary notes apply only to the St.Vincent work and are considered by many to be the best of the 17th century's many translations and printings of Vincent de Lerins. The long first Preface deals with the French editions which tended to allow Papal supremacy in these controveries. Here combining the Vincent and Augustine controversialists' on early Catholic heresies in one abridged volume (WING V453).
