Title and the 2 preliminary leaves have small edge-tears and are re-hinged on newer paper stubs, text pages mostly clean and crisp with occasional small marks and light browning. Bookplates: "ex Libris Ludovic Blondin" and armorial "Friedemann Graf und Herr von Werthern". *Rare early Protestant treatise intended to show the harmful effects of Papacy, partly based on sources collected by Joachim Vadian. Written as a History of the life of Holy Roman Emperor Henry IV (1050-1106), it also mentions some events from British history, citing the Venerable Bede, John Scotus, Archbishop Lanfranc and William the Conquerer. Black Letter text in German with printed side-notes. The 104 text woodcuts are of superb quality, well printed, some some after designs by Holbein (reference BM STC German, 1455-1600 p.839).

By the author of "Doctor Syntax" [William Combe 1742-1823]
THE ENGLISH DANCE OF DEATH, from the designs of Thomas ROWLANDSON, with metrical illustrations, by the author of "Doctor Syntax." Vol.I + Vol.II.
London, R. Ackermann's Repository of Arts (printed J. Diggens). 1815, 1816 Hand-coloured plates (71 of 72 - lacks "the Waltz" in Vol.II) + hand-coloured frontis & engraved titlepage by Thomas Rowlandson. . Two Volumes gilt half black roan on 4 faux raised bands with red gilt-titled spine labels and marbled boards (tips and edges worn/rubbed). Hand-coloured engraved title with large vignette of 8 skeletons dancing in a graveyard + printed title +[4]pp Index to Vol.I + iii-viii Advertisement by the Author + 295pp; Vol.II hand- coloured frontis of Death atop a globe + printed title + [4]pp Index to Vol.II + 299pp. Almost all plates show off-setting to opposite leaf and "shadow" on page facing back of illustration. Some spotting or staining to margins of text pages and plates. One plate poorly re-inserted with brown glue, about 12 others with nicks or trimming of captions. All have 2 pin pricks to fore-edge margins, so this set was probably bound up from original parts issues, which usually had 3 plates per part and preceded the book editions. *PROVENANCE - the original owner of these books was the author's second wife Charlotte Combe, whose signature appears on the flyleaf of both volumes. Combe lived for many years imprisoned for debt within the limits of the King's Bench Prison - he married Charlotte in January 1814, shortly before the parts publication of the English Dance of Death, and died in the King's Bench 19th June 1823. His widow Charlotte afterwards went to live in Ireland with her friend Mrs Eugenia Curtis, widow of Joseph Curtis of Booterstown, whose son James Gray William Curtis later owned the books - his armorial bookplate is on the pastedown of both volumes. He died in 1870. The next owner was Henry A. Grimston whose signature March 13th 1873 is on the fly-leaves. Parts of this history are given in a laid-in typescript (signed R.R.J. 7/5/1905) addressed to the last recorded owner, R.G. Brown Esq.

SPORTING TOUR THROUGH FRANCE ..2 volumes
Pr.Cundee Albion-Press. London, LongmanmHurst ,Rees and Orme +C.Chapple 1806 aquatint plates & engraved plates (56 includes portrait + 2 engraved pictorial exta titlepages] + 29 vignettes by Bryant et al. . 2 volumes. Quarto half calf blind-tooled on 4 faux bands gilt + 2 contrasting labels to each volume (some splits to head and foot of spine but covers well attached /edges bit worn) lxvi +108pp + [6p=index] ; xii +260pp +[8pp =index& plate list] + 4pp of sporting books published. 2 plates and the titlepage vignette neatly handcoulored. Last plate in vol.1 is slightly soiled and wrinkled and was sewn in at an angle thus margins are not all equal. There is a brown stain to the gutter side at the front of volume one diminishing within the preliminaries but still affects the gutter margin of the first 24 pages but never encroaching on any of the actual plates except for the portrait and the engraved titlepage. There is rather less foxing/dusting than usual with the paper in crisp neat condition and there are MANY FINE FOLDING AQUATINT VIEWS & interesting hunting & shooting observations. Also nice vignettes [the final one in vol 2 printed upside down} actually several more than are listed in the vignette list. Some scattered plates in vol.2 have some pale foxing but most plates are free of any foxing. A well illustrated set.* Thomas Thornton was a famous sportsman of the Napoleonic Era, on his visits to France he presented Napoleon with a pair of Durs Egg pistols.
