There is quite some edge & corner creasing and quite some marginal worm holes but if affecting the text never more than a single letter per line is lost so that the text is quite readable. There are a few leaves whose edges are chipped or with some paper loss, some of which are repaired archivally, but none touch the text. The Romanorum Castrametatio folding plate is rather wrinkled and has two tears without loss repaired to verso with archival tape but the page is well attached as originally bound in. The titlepage is rather dusty and the paper facing the title and the last leaf were cut from earlier printer's waste. An eminently readable copy, a bit tired but in a sound contemporary binding with all pages well attached. Deals with the

London, Joshua Kirton 3rd edition corrected & enlarged 1653] . Small octavo brown cloth modern library binding, spine gilt titled with accession or shelf number 292. Recent plain end-papers, text collated complete [18]pp +418pp +[32]pp, leaf A4 bound before A3 and its conjoint [A5] before [A6]. Titlepage mounted with loss to margins, date with small hole making middle numbers unreadable, but edition is clearly stated as "The third" which accords with 1653 in British Library copy, and with printed last number "3" clearly visible at foot of titlepage (Kirton published only 3rd 1653 and 4th 1664 editions, with only 1653 edition mis-spelling Genealogy as here). Verso of title had old ink scribbles which partly show through, but illegible as page is mounted, and with Westminster library reserve stock stamp etc on the back (library stamps also on p105 & last page of index). Four pages with old marginal pen trials/notes, ink spots and handsome fancy name "Randall" to foot of p228. Some pages slightly cropped, touching but not affecting text. *Each of the heroes, Argonauts or gods is briefly described, followed by longer account of their deeds by "the Interpreter" (Ross) with their guises and adventures as recounted by the original authors in whose works they appeared. Thus for example Midas is shown by the side notes to figure in Ovid's Metamorphoses and other works with quotations given in Greek or Latin. Finally a Christian moral is sometimes added.

London, Vol I J. and J. Knapton & 9 others, Vols II-IV J. Darby & 8 others. 1731, 1726, 1727, 1727 Copperplate portraits of the monarchs (19) by VanderGucht. . Four volumes worn half calf with 2 of 4 spine labels (3 covers detached/wear to corners and hinges). Vol I xvi +400 +[36]pp index (Henry I to accession of Richard II); Vol II 427 +[28]pp index (Richard II to Edward IV); Vol III 420 +40pp index (Edward V to Queen Mary); Vol IV 542 +34pp index + 22pp separate index to the Appendix (Elizabeth to death of James I plus a long Appendix pp322-542). Gathering 7R is a single leaf but page number & catchword are correct. In Vol IV the final gathering of the Appendix is in 3 with THE END so there is a blank missing, the index starts a new gathering. The Portrait of Queen Elizabeth at the beginning of Vol I should probably be at the start of the last volume. *These volumes contain primary sources for the history of England and have printed marginal dates & notes as well as explanatory footnotes. They all come from the Advocates Library with engraved label to pastedown, neat oval stamp and donor's inscription "Caroli Winchester 1859" to fly leaf & a single oval stamp to blank verso of each titlepage. Some sporadic foxing to a few gatherings but else all clean, crisp and tight inside.

Salmasius,Claude] (1588-1653)
DEFENSIO REGIA PRO CAROLO I ad serenissimum Magnae Britanniae Regem Carolum II,filium natu majorem, heredem & successorem legitimum.
Leiden is suggested as the place of printing but no indication given in the book, Sumptibus Regiis 1650 . Duodecimo vellum yapp edge with manuscript spine title title (bit darkened esp. to spine) (x) +472pp. *Anonymously published work by Claude de Saumaise in vindication of Charles I against the regicides and for the legitimate succession of his son. The Sumptibus Regiis shows that Charles II commissioned this work while in exile. Milton was deputized by Parliament to write a rebuttal to this work, the PRO POPULO ANGLICANO DEFENSIO (see our copy of this for sale V69033). The printing history of the Defensio is complicated as it also came out in Paris and Rotterdam in the same year (see Madan 5th series of The Library). A crisp clean tight copy.
