Earlier ed. published in 1750 under title: Traité des plaies d'armes à feu. Reach,Angus B[ethune] (1821-1856) illustrated by Geroge Cruikshank
CLEMENT LORIMER; or the book with the Iron Clasps. A Romance.
London, David Bogue 1849 Etched plates [12 as listed] by George Cruikshank. . Small octavo [173x122mm] half red calf marbled boards four raised bands (spine partly split/gilt rubbed/tips worn & scuffed) vi +280pp. Coat of arm bookplate of J.Butler Bowdon of Pleasington Hall. The frontis and a few other plates slightly cropped at the lower edge, titlepage with light brown stain and adhesion marks in gutter. Some foxing/fingering, one text leaf loose and chipped to edge (no loss). Plates are unusual some being ovals in shaded surrounds but some of these have offset to the opposite text page although this does not affect readability. *This Scottish author was one of the first to make use of sensationalism in a crime novel, the book includes criminal conspiracies, mind bending drugs, victimization, and secrets from the past. This is also one of the first crime novels about race horse nobbling so that the criminal gambler may win. This is quite a scare first edition by a short lived author and journalist.

SYNTAGMA INSCRIPTIONUM ANTIQUARUM cumprimis Romae Veteris, quarum omissa est recensio in vasto Jani Gruteri Opere cujus isthoc dici possit Supplementum; Opus Posthumum ..
Leipzig, Printed Johann Eric Hahn for Jo. Fritsch & Jo. Fr. Gleditsch 1682 Engraved frontispiece includs the portrait of author in allegorical frontispiece by Johann Jacob de Sandrart + figures in the text + many foliated initial capitals & head- & tailpi. Folio vellum with black leather gilt spine label (tips rubbed) fine armorial bookplate with motto Tuum Est. Engraved f rontis + printed title +28pp prelims +1032pp + doublepage genealogical table. The titlepage in black only and title without the additional "cum commentariis absolutissimis et instructissimis indicibus nunc primu`m editum" on the titlepage. This edition thus without the index which seems to go with the red & black titlepage. Precedence unknown but usually the index is the last item typeset as the book has to be printed to allow page numbering so probably the those without index are the earlier state. Some inscriptions in Greek, most in Latin many now lost or indecipherable. A very clean, crisp copy of this indispensable and monumental work.
