Some signs of use including one clean tear which has been taped and 2 leaves with dusty, tatty margins but no loss of text. *Looking at alcholic drinks from a nutrional point of view, from statistical tables relating to mortality, from fatigue at work comparted in cold, hot or temperate climates. Much of the evidence is however anecdotal although at the end the author links diseases and mental and physical powers to abstinence or inebriation.

ON THE HISTORY AND PROPERTIES CHEMICAL AND MEDICAL OF TOBACCO a probationary essay presented to the Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons, Glasgow
Glasgow, For the author 1st first edition 1840 Plate after De Bry's Historia Brasiliana (1590) + lithographed Titlepage & dedication leaf . Quarto semi-limp full morocco leather blind tooled & gilt titled (foot of spine sl.damaged for 1cm/tips rubbed) All Edges Gilt 68pp. Cleland family copy with signature of James Dennistown Cleland on margin of TP and A.R. Dick Cleland 1882 on FEP. Small news cutting tipped onto FEP re tobacco. First & last leaf sl.foxed and the 2 leaves of "explication of the plate" & the De Bry plate have text & plate printed on India paper & mounted on stiffish mounts. These mounts show marginal damp mark not affecting the India paper. *Plates "on India" are often "special" copies of books, issued for more discerning customers at a higher price, as the India paper takes a crisper, better ink impression than printing on ordinary paper. An interesting paper delivered by Dr.Cleland, a lecturer on Mecical Jurisprudence in the School of Medicine in submission as a candidate for admission to the faculty of Physicians & Surgeons. Also includes a good bibliography on tobacco (cf. Wellcome 11, p.357 which lacks the final page).
