London, George Routledge 1883 colour illustrations to one side of leaf only other side left blank all pages have some color illustrations to one side of page + some text. . oblong 4to color illustration of hunt to front cover and party to back cover with green cloth spine gilt titled [boards darkened and rubbed/edges worn/bottom of spine frayed for 5mm] all edges rouged 96pp + publisher's info on recto of endpaper. Blank pages are counted but not numbered thourghout. First pages with quite some foxing but thereafter only sporadic foxing. A tight neat copy. 8 stories including Christmas, hunting, steeplechase, Holidays etc.

[Geneva], Antonius Rebulius 1561 Woodcut emblem with surrounding text from Matthew 7 verse 13 . 198 x 120mm contempory leather blindstamped central ornament and panels blind ruled on 4 raised spine bands [Hinges rubbed but sound wihtout any spliting/lower cover with some scratching else sound and tight] [30], 980, 80pp (Index) with colophon on verso of last leaf. Two names crossed out to blank areas of title +1709 German ownership. Two corners torn off one just affecting a few letters of the side-notes on one side of the paper and some areas of worm holes in the margins, touching two letters of a side-note otherwise clear of any printed area. There is pale damp marking and some neat old marginal comments but nothing affecting the clear legibility of the text. The endpapers however are not original although an original blank leaf preceeds the titlepage. This is the first Reboul octavo edition and the last edition published in Calvin's lifetime. He had continually revised and augmented the work starting with a 21 chapter book and finally ending with a nearly four fold increase in length. With the 1559 edition an extensive alphabetical index was added with header topics under which were summaries of the chapter contents. This was Calvins most important work and was translated into many languages. Referenced by: Adams C-362.

Frankfurt, Claudius Marnius & heirs of Johann Aubrius 1603 Printer's mark of flying horse over cornucopia & hand from cloud holding caduceus to titlepage + 2 full-page portaits of six + seven kings at page 38 & 410 + head- & tail-pieces & figural or folia. Folio handsome gilt 18th century gilt sprinkled calf with red spine label and 6 raised bands, gilt spine compartments, raised bands, dentelles & reverses (minor splitting to head and foot of one board but covers well attached, tips bumped). All Edges Marbled to match endpapers, sstamp on flyleaf "bound by J. Clarke". Two armorial bookplates (see provenance below), 2 miniature crested RFG monogram stamps on titlepage, [12]pp + 898pp + [32]pp index, verso of last leaf with repeated printer's mark. Collated complete. Side notes throughout with some erudite neat comments in pencil and a list of indexed page numbers written on an extra free front endpaper. Titlepage a bit dusty, narrow faint mark of former damp along front edges of final 45 leaves not affecting print, last 7 text leaves with light red marks at top where page numbers corrected by previous owner, but pages all crisp, handsomely printed, and without any tears. *A very attractive copy, which the 2 armorial bookplates indicate was formerly owned by Sir Joseph Henry Hawley of Leybourne Grange (d. 1875), and in 1911 by Colonel Sir Joseph Alfred Bradney (1859-1933) archaeologist and author of a multi-volume History of Monmouthshire (pub. 1904-32).

Boswell says: "This year [1768] was published a ridicule of his style, under the title of Lexiphanes. Sir John Hawkins ascribes it to Dr. Kenrick; but its author was one Campbell, a Scotch purser in the navy. The ridicule consisted of applying Johnson's 'words of large meaning' to insignificant matters, as if one should put the armor of Goliath upon a dwarf .. This malicious drollery .. could do no harm to its illustrious object." A lovely clean crisp copy.

Quarto worn calf on 6 raised bands with spine compartments gilt (covers detached lacks both spine labels cover edges very worn) page edges blue. Half title + titlepage +[6]pp Preface +[2]pp blanks with some offsetting from facing text +726pp. First 3 leaves browned for 2cm of margins, a few gatherings with light foxing but generally very clean contents. *A comprehensive work on the economy, commerce and situation of Britain in the 18th century with radical suggestions for improvement. It was published after many years' effort shortly before the author's death - "Dr. Johnson believed that Campbell's disappointment on the indifferent success of the work killed him" (DNB).

Basel, Adam Petri de Langendorff. Second Latin edition 1517 Fine border of cherubs riding dragons, nudes, men in armour, foliage, columns etc. signed Urs Graf (U.G.) and with date 1516. . Folio bevelled wooden covers with wide rolled pigskin spine handsomely blind stamped with rampant lions in lozenges between parallel strands of vines & flowers. TP is printed in red & black. Spines with three raised bands and diamond shaped alternating with stylized flower tools (lacks clasps/some worm holes to wood and vellum) Fore-edge lettered Simon de Cassea (14)+469 leaves + colophon with large printer's mark for Alantsee of 2 griffons suporting a shield with cipher ALT and supporting an oak tree above (total fatness of book just under 11cm) TP with three ownerships (2 on top margin one with a single line through it the 3rd to side of text) Fore-edge of TP slightly rough & tanned. Some large foliated initial capitals and fine double column typography of this near incunabulum. Some worm holes usually isolated not affecting integrity of the paper nor readability of the print as they are mostly confined to the margins, mainly at the beginning & end of the book. There are a few old scholarly comments or marginal marks (affects about 6 or 7 pages) Two clean marginal tears without loss and one corner lost but affecting less than half the width of the margin at the corner (STC302 Adam C857 collations a-HH6+JJ8). A duplicate copy from the Royal Bavarian Court Library (old provenance/shelf mark on pastedown) and a really beautiful copy.

Singleton. . 12mo [but in 8's] half calf (head of spine repaired/lower part of one hinge cracked/2mm lacking from foot of spine) xxxi + 186pp last leaf in Facsimile. Some foxing or browning - mainly marginal. *This edition "contains more than double the quantity of matter" than the 1st edition which only had 92pp and which was also published in 1803. This work pokes fun at the then current medical practice. The frontis shows several doctors coming to blows as to how to treat the patient. Far scarcer than the American edition this has only 3 London imprints in COPAC, which has 10 U.S. editions with imprints from New York, Philadelphia, Virginia, Boston etc.
