CORSO, GREGORY, The Vestal Lady on Brattle and Other Poems
CORSO, GREGORY
The Vestal Lady on Brattle and Other Poems
Cambridge, Mass, Richard Brukenfeld, 1955. First Edition. Paperback. Scarce first edition of Corso's first book in staple-bound wraps with white covers titled in black and blue on front and priced "one dollar" in black on back. Sunning and light staining as is common for this edition. A small tear to top front of spine with perhaps 1/8 inch piece of cover paper missing with an adjacent closed tear of about 1/2 inch. Some very light rubbing to spine edges but generally an uncommonly well preserved cover. Text block is clean and tight with just two very small blemishes, one appears to be a little printer's ink offsetting, the other a tiny ink spot. A very desirable copy of Corso's first book, the production expenses of which were underwritten by students at Harvard and Radcliffe. (500 were printed but the poet is said to have stated that he only received 250, the other copies having been lost in the mail.) "The poems featured in the volume are usually considered apprentice works heavily indebted to Corso's reading. They are, however, unique in their innovative use of jazz rhythms most notably in "Requiem for 'Bird' Parker, Musician," which many call the strongest poem in the book's cadences of spoken English, and hipster jargon." (Poetry Foundation). Undoubtedly one of the giants of the San Francisco Poets of the "Beat Generation" Corso was born in New York City in 1931 and died in Minnesota in January 2001. Very Good Minus .
