100 Essential American Poems
St. Martin's Press, 2009. Gekartonneerd met stofomslag. Pp: 288. The way we view our nation-its history, its traditions, even our distinctly American voice-is largely determined by our literature. In this rewarding and thought-provoking book are gathered poems that have been essential components of our common American culture, from the earliest days of our nation through canonic works of the nineteenth century and up to the present day. 100 Essential American Poems includes fondly remembered works by such familiar figures as Longfellow, Poe, and Whitman, and popular classics like "A Visit from St. Nicholas" and "Casey at the Bat," but it also features passionate outcries from poets like Paul Laurence Dunbar and Langston Hughes that highlight our ongoing national racial tensions, and poems by such women as Anne Bradstreet, Emily Dickinson, and Edna St. Vincent Millay that supply a distinctly female perspective on American life. Also included are the lyrics of such expressions of the American spirit as "Yankee Doodle," "The Star-Spangled Banner" and "This Land Is Your Land," in addition to a few surprises! The immortal poems and songs included here, each preceded by an illuminating headnote, will remind every reader of the richness and variety of the poetry of America and its people. Lyn Macdonald 42076
1914-1918: Voices and Images of the Great War
Penguin, 1991. Paperback. Pp: 346. This book uses personal accounts and illustrations, mainly from the author's own archives, to cover all aspects of World War I-from departure of the Old Contemptibles to fight the Kaiser in 1914, young men eagerly enlisting, high hopes of 1915 that fizzled out at Gallipoli, to the bloody fields of Flanders. It runs through the battles of the Somme and Passchendaele to the coming of the Americans, fighting in the closing months of the war, joyous celebrations of Armistice Day and burial of the unknown warrior in the aftermath. The authors have drawn on the experiences of the men who fought, touching on subjects as diverse as propaganda, fear, morale, bravery, bawdiness, filth, and frivolity and the stark contrast between attitudes of civilians at home and the men at the front. Newspapers, magazines, letters, diaries, songs, poems, as well as a wealth of first-hand anecdotes and personal accounts by the soldiers themselves are included in this book. ISBN: 9780140146745. , [36 Poems by 36 Haikai Poets]
[36 Poems by 36 Haikai Poets]
19. [36 Poems by 36 Haikai Poets]. N.p. C. 1900-1920. 30.4 x 26.5cm volume string-bound Japanese-style, fukuro-toji with olive green brocade covers. The blank title slip is mounted on the top left of the front cover. The inner wrappers are covered in gold-flecked paper and the free endpapers appear to be laid paper. [18] cho with an image of a poet and a poem in Japanese calligraphy on each page for a total of [36] pages. The images are in black with a light wash of peach, green and gray on heavy Japanese paper with a poem and poet's name in sumi ink. Each one has the same red hanko by the artist, likely Kashō oe樵. Kashō was one of the pen names of the established calligrapher and painter Ike no Taiga 池大- (1723 - 1776) and this could be an ode to his work. The poet depicted on the final page appears to be the haiku poet Hattori Tohō oe部oe芳 (1657-1730), a protege of legendary haiku poet Bashō 松尾芭蕉 (1644-94). A delightful rendition of the theme of "36 poems by 36 poets," done with a whimsical feel. Likely about 1900-1920 by a skilled amateur. Slight wear to covers, string is snapped at top. .

The 500 Hidden Secrets of Berlin
The 500 Hidden Secrets. Paperback. Pp: 264. NEW EDITION SEPTEMBER 2023 The 500 Hidden Secrets of Berlin is the perfect book for those who wish to discover the city without ending up in all the usual tourist haunts, as well as for residents who are keen to track down the city's best-kept secrets. In The 500 Hidden Secrets of Berlin, Nathalie Dewalhens shares hundreds of must-know addresses in the German capital, like the unexpected authentic coffee bar around the corner of Checkpoint Charlie, or the apartment where David Bowie stayed while composing some of his best songs. Or how about trying a pizza topped with purple potato crisps at one of the hippest pizzerias in town? Visit the boutique of an unconventional fashion designer with Iranian roots, or venture off to a peaceful lake outside the city, where you can enjoy a drink sitting on the wooden boardwalk, or check out a hip food market on the banks of the Spree? Berlin has so much to offer, and this guide will help you decide where to begin. Berlin will always have a very special place in NATHALIE DEWALHENS' nomadic heart. The city, unlike any other place in the world, continues to inspire her. Many of her poems and short stories have a Berlin theme. PHILIPP BGLE is a Berlin-based photographer who thinks of his hometown as the perfect place to capture moments, people and fashion. ISBN: 9789460583087. Cond./Kwaliteit: Goed.

50s: the story of a decade. The Story of a Decade
Random House Publishing Group. Paperback. Pp: 784. This engrossing anthology assembles classic New Yorker pieces from a complex era enshrined in the popular imagination as the decade of poodle skirts and Cold War paranoia"featuring contributions from Philip Roth, John Updike, Nadine Gordimer, and Adrienne Rich, along with fresh analysis of the 1950s by some of today`s finest writers. The New Yorker was there in real time, chronicling the tensions and innovations that lay beneath the era`s placid surface. In this thrilling volume, classic works of reportage, criticism, and fiction are complemented by new contributions from the magazine`s present all-star lineup of writers. The magazine`s commitment to overseas reporting flourished in the 1950s, leading to important dispatches from East Berlin, the Gaza Strip, and Cuba during the rise of Castro. Closer to home, the fight to break barriers and establish a new American identity led to both illuminating coverage, as in a portrait of Thurgood Marshall at an NAACP meeting in Atlanta, and trenchant commentary, as in E. B. White`s blistering critique of Senator Joe McCarthy. The arts scene is recalled in critical writing rarely reprinted, including Wolcott Gibbs on My Fair Lady, Anthony West on Invisible Man, and Philip Hamburger on Candid Camera. Also featured are great early works from Philip Roth and Nadine Gordimer, as well as startling poems by Theodore Roethke and Anne Sexton, among others. Completing the panoply are insightful and entertaining new pieces by present-day New Yorker contributors examining the 1950s through contemporary eyes. The result is a vital portrait of American culture as only one magazine in the world could do it.Including contributions by Elizabeth Bishop " Truman Capote " John Cheever " Roald Dahl " Janet Flanner " Nadine Gordimer " A. J. Liebling " Dwight Macdonald " Joseph Mitchell " Marianne Moore " Vladimir Nabokov " Sylvia Plath " V. S. Pritchett " Adrienne Rich " Lillian Ross " Philip Roth " Anne Sexton " James Thurber " John Updike " Eudora Welty " E. B. White " Edmund Wilson And featuring new perspectives by Jonathan Franzen " Malcolm Gladwell " Adam Gopnik " Elizabeth Kolbert " Jill Lepore " Rebecca Mead " Paul Muldoon " Evan Osnos " David RemnickPraise for The 50s  "Superb: a gift that keeps on giving.""Kirkus Reviews (starred review)"[A] magnificent anthology.""Literary Review.
