The Court of Holyrood. An Old Story
Edinburgh, Alexander Macredie, 1825. 3rd edition. Hardcover. pp. 194. 8vo. Bound in original paper-covered boards. The original plain boards are present but partially detached. The paper spine covering is absent. There is a bookplate from Colquhoun's Circulating Library, of Edinburgh, affixed to the inside of the front board. The stitching of the text block is loose but holding. The contents shows some light foxing, but are otherwise unmarked and remain perfectly readable. A poor, to fair, copy. A novel about Mary, Queen of Scots, with a short Preface signed by 'The Authors'. Some uncertainty appears to exist (most apparently amongst book dealers offering for sale copies of this title) as to the dates of publication of the first, second and third editions. Part of this confusion is engendered, no doubt, by the 1826 issue of the Literary Gazette which notes this title as having been 'just published'. In fact, an earlier edition was published in 1822 under the title 'The Court of Holyrood, Fragments of an Old Story.' by Macredie, Skeely, a predecessor of the publisher of the 1825 third edition. There is no easily discernible record of when, or by whom, the first edition was published. What is certain to us is that our copy is designated as the 'Third Edition' and bears the date of 1825 at the foot of the title page. .

Linlithgow - the Prospect of Their Majesties Palace of Linlithgow - Slezar Engraving
Tim Jordan, 1693. . Apparently original Print by John Slezer which has been mounted on thin card.Image from Theatrum Scotiae by John Slezer, 1693. Measures 18 x 11 1/4 (46x28.5cms) Linlithgow Palace rises above loch and town, in this view from the west. Mary, Queen of Scots was born in the palace in 1542. In 1745, almost 50 years after Slezer's view was published in Theatrum Scotiae, the palace was gutted by fire, and it has remained a ruin ever since. The crown on the tower of St Michael's Church to the right was removed in the 1800s, but was replaced in1869 by a replica of the impressive crown seen here on the palace tower. Figures in this view include fishermen in boats and people walking on the palace embankment. The central fold and a long blind tear top right have been repaired with archival tape. Surface a bit duty but would frame well. Mounting has resulted in slight loss of the text bottom left. See scans. . Fair

9789046802540 Antonia Fraser 11359, Lodewijk XIV. Leven en liefdes van de zonnekoning
Antonia Fraser 11359
Lodewijk XIV. Leven en liefdes van de zonnekoning
Nieuw Amsterdam. Paperback. Pp: 416. Haar werk is vele malen onderscheiden. In 1999 werd ze Commander of the British Empire. Antonia Fraser woont met haar echtgenoot, de Nobelprijswinnaar Harold Pinter in Londen. ISBN: 9789046802540. London, Joannem Billium; John Bull, 1618. First edition. Fine Binding. The important and scarce large paper copy, of the first edition of Patrick Adamson's poetry, rebound in a sumptuous morocco binding at the National Library of Wales. A very scarce work. With the errata leaf to the rear, and the uncommon three printed leaves of the Assertiones Quaedam. Present to only variant copies. This issue has the royal arms to the verso of the title page. Patrick Adamson was a Scottish divine. This edition of Adamson's works have been edited by his son in law Thomas Wilson. It includes for the first time, Adamson's paraphrase of the Book of Job in Latin hexameters. It is dedicated to King James I who, as James VI removed Adamson from office. Adamson was removed from his position as the Archbishop of St Andrews due to his conflict with the General Assembly who were strongly Presbyterian. Following many heretical allegations including the supposed use of a witch to cure himself Adamson was excommunicated. This ruling was later rescinded as the General Assembly did not have the authority to do this. Following the attempted excommunication Adamson was found guilty of charges such as 'falsehood, double dealing, erroneous doctrine' by the Assembly which resulted in King James VI withdrawing his primacy and transferring his episcopal revenues to the 2nd Duke of Lennox. Prior his being removed from his position Adamson has written Latin translation of the Lamentations of Jermiah and the Book of Revelation. Both are to this work. This dedication is a venture to revive Adamson's reputation from the misinterpretations of the Scottish Presbyterians. (ODNB). The collected works also contains Adamson's famed first publication, his poetical attack on the Roman Catholics in Aberdeen 'De Papistarum Superstitiosis Ineptiis&apos. It also contains his poem of thanksgiving regarding the birth of James VI/I, his 'Serenissimi ac nobilissimi, Scotiæ, Angliæ, Franciæ, & Hyberniæ Principis' and his highly acclaimed catechism of verse 'Catechismus Latino carmine redditus&apos. His poem on the birth of James VI/I stated that Mary, Queen of Scots, was the rightful From the library of Lord Harlech, Brogyntyn Hall, Shropshire. This copy has possibly been bound without a blank. To the second half of the work the pages are only paginated to the recto. With a separate title page for 'Threnorum Sive Lamentationum Ieremiæ Prophetæ' and 'Apocalypsis S Ioannis Theologi' dated 1618. Their pagination and register is continuous. 'Serenissimi Ac No-Bilisimi..' has a divisional title and begins a new register. This is dated 1566 as is called for. 'Catechismus Latino Carmine', 'Confessio Fidei' and 'De Papistarum Superstitiosis' have separate title pages dated 1618. All of these with the register continuous with 'Serenissimi ac Nobilissimi' A beautifully bound copy of this very scarce work. In a full morocco binding with gilt stamping to the spine. [50] ll.Album amicorum of a settler in Australia and his family, with rare photographs of Queensland (Australia) and India in the 1870s.The photographs in the album are extraordinary, especially those of the small town of Springsure. In 1841, the first photograph was taken in Australia, of Bridge Street in Sydney. While explorers and early colonists quickly became a subject of interest for Australian photographers, photographs of early settlements are quite rare. The photographs of the government house in Calcutta and the crew of the H.M.S. Narcissus in the album are also of historical interest. Together with the numerous drawings, paintings and poems, the album offers a fascinating insight into life in Queensland in the late 19th century.Charles Shortt Dicken (1841-1902) was born in India. He was a lieutenant for the Royal Irish Fusiliers, before he settled in Queensland in 1864. He entered the mounted police in 1866 and worked as a police magistrate until he was appointed secretary in the office of the Agent-General for Queensland in London in 1880. When he retired from this position in 1891, he received the title C.M.G, Companion in the Order of Saint Michael and Saint George. This is awarded to those who render extraordinary or important non-military service to the United Kingdom in a foreign or Commonwealth country. In the final years of his life, he contributed to The British Empire series, a series of four volumes which aimed to offer trusthworthy information about the colonies and settlement of the British Empire. Dicken was a co-author of volume IV - Australasia, published in 1900.The cloth is worn at the head of the spine and shows a few small holes on the boards, revealing the leather album beneath. The illustration of the "execution of Mary, Queen of Scots" is missing on leaf [12]. Some of the dried plants are falling off. The edges and corners of the leaves show some signs of wear, the leaves slightly browned. Overall in good condition, the photographs, artworks and other decorations are very well preserved.l Mennel, P., Dictionary of Australasian biography, p. 132; The Daily Telegraph, november 15, 1902, p. 4.
