Conscious Experience. A Logical Inquiry
Harvard University Press, 2019. Gekartonneerd met stofomslag. Pp: 440. A distinguished philosopher offers a novel account of experience and reason, and develops our understanding of conscious experience and its relationship to thought: a new reformed empiricism. The role of experience in cognition is a central and ancient philosophical concern. How, theorists ask, can our private experiences guide us to knowledge of a mind-independent reality? Exploring topics in logic, philosophy of mind, and epistemology, Conscious Experience proposes a new answer to this age-old question, explaining how conscious experience contributes to the rationality and content of empirical beliefs. According to Anil Gupta, this contribution cannot be determined independently of an agent's conceptual scheme and prior beliefs, but that doesn't mean it is entirely mind-dependent. While the rational contribution of an experience is not propositional-it does not, for example, provide direct knowledge of the world-it does authorize certain transitions from prior views to new views. In short, the rational contribution of an experience yields a rule for revising views. Gupta shows that this account provides theoretical freedom: it allows the observer to radically reconceive the world in light of empirical findings. Simultaneously, it grants empirical reason significant power to constrain, forcing particular conceptions of self and world on the rational inquirer. These seemingly contrary virtues are reconciled through novel treatments of presentation, appearances, and ostensive definitions. Collectively, Gupta's arguments support an original theory: reformed empiricism. He abandons the idea that experience is a source of knowledge and justification. He also abandons the idea that concepts are derived from experience. But reformed empiricism preserves empiricism's central insight: experience is the supreme epistemic authority. In the resolution of factual disagreements, experience trumps all. ISBN: 9780674987784. Cond./Kwaliteit: Goed.

Paleontology. A Brief History of Life
Templeton Foundation Press. Paperback. Pp: 228. """Endlessly absorbing and informative. It would be hard to imagine a better introduction to this most important and fascinating field.”—Bill Bryson, author of A Short History of Nearly Everything Paleontology: A Brief History of Life is the fifth title published in the Templeton Science and Religion Series, in which scientists from a wide range of fields distill their experience and knowledge into brief tours of their respective specialties. In this volume, Ian Tattersall, a highly esteemed figure in the fields of anthropology, archaeology, and paleontology, leads a fascinating tour of the history of life and the evolution of human beings. Starting at the very beginning, Tattersall examines patterns of change in the biosphere over time, and the correlations of biological events with physical changes in the Earths environment. He introduces the complex of evolutionary processes, situates human beings in the luxuriant diversity of Life (demonstrating that however remarkable we may legitimately find ourselves to be, we are the product of the same basic forces and processes that have driven the evolutionary histories of all other creatures), and he places the origin of our extraordinary spiritual sensibilities in the context of the exaptational and emergent acquisition of symbolic cognition and thought. Concise and yet comprehensive, historically penetrating and yet up-to-date, responsibly factual and yet engaging, Paleontology serves as the perfect entre to science's greatest story. ". Semantics and Cognition
MIT Press. Paperback. Pp: 297. This book emphasizes the role of semantics as a bridge between the theory of language and the theories of other cognitive capacities such as visual perception and motor control. It develops the position that the study of semantics of natural language is the study of the structure of thought, and that grammatical structure offers a much more important source of evidence for the theory of cognition than is often supposed by linguists, philosophers, psychologists, or computer scientists. The stuff of thought. Language as a window into human nature
Penguin, 2008. Paperback. Pp: 512. In The Stuff of Thought: Language as a Window into Human Nature, Steven Pinker looks at how the relationship between words and thoughts can help us understand who we are. Why do so many swear words involve topics like sex, bodily functions or the divine? Why do some children's names thrive while others fall out of favour? Why do we threaten and bribe and seduce in such elaborate, often comical ways? How can a choice of metaphor damn a politician or start a war? And why do we rarely say what we actually mean? Language, as Steven Pinker shows, is at the heart of our lives, and through the way we use it - whether to inform, persuade, entertain or manipulate - we can glimpse the very essence of what makes us human. 'Awesome' Daily Mail 'Highly entertaining. funny and thought-provoking' The Times 'Anyone interested in language should read The Stuff of Thought. moments of genuine revelation and some very good jokes' Mark Haddon, Sunday Telegraph Books of the Year 'No one writes about language as clearly as Steven Pinker, and this is his best book yet' David Crystal, Financial Times Steven Pinker is the Johnstone Family Professor in the Department of Psychology at Harvard University. Until 2003, he taught in the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at MIT. He conducts research on language and cognition, writes for publications such as The New York Times, Time and Slate, and is the author of six books, including The Language Instinct, How the Mind Works and The Blank Slate. 9780151005574 Antonio R. Damasio, Looking for Spinoza. Joy, Sorrow, and the Feeling Brain
Antonio R. Damasio
Looking for Spinoza. Joy, Sorrow, and the Feeling Brain
Harcourt, 2003. Gekartonneerd met stofomslag. Pp: 355. Joy, sorrow, jealousy, and awe-these and other feelings are the stuff of our daily lives. Thought to be too private for science to explain and not essential for understanding cognition, they have largely been ignored. But not by Spinoza, and not by Antonio Damasio. Here, in a humane work of science, Damasio draws on his innovative research and on his experience with neurological patients to examine how feelings and the emotions that underlie them support human survival and enable the spirit's greatest creations. " Looking for Spinoza" reveals the biology of our sophisticated survival mechanisms. It rediscovers a thinker whose work prefigures modern neuroscience, not only in his emphasis on emotions and feelings, but also in his refusal to separate mind and body. Together, the scientist and the philosopher help us understand what we're made of, and what we're here for. Based on laboratory investigations but moving beyond those to society and culture, "Looking for Spinoza" is a master work of science and writing. Antonio Damasio, widely recognized as one of the world's leading neuroscientists, has for decades been investigating the neurobiological foundations of human life. In "Descartes' Error" he explored the importance of emotion in rational behavior, and in "The Feeling of What Happens" he developed the neurobiology of the self. Damasio's new book on feeling and emotion offers unexpected grounds for optimism about our survival and the human condition. ISBN: 9780151005574. Cond./Kwaliteit: Goed.

Venetia; [Venice], Francesco Sansovino, 1568. Vellum. A very scarce translation of Alfonso de la Torre's important humanist work on morals and human wisdom, here translated into Italian by Domencio Delfino, who was wrongly thought to be the sole author of this work. A very scarce work. Written in Italian. Being the second Italian edition of this allegorical work on moral philosophy and the 'seven liberal arts&apos. This work is an octavo, with the signatures running as *8, A-V8, X7. With a register leaf to the rear. Collated from Jisc from a copy held at the University College London Library, complete. An Italian translation of 'Vision Delectable' by Alfonso de la Torre, which was originally published in Spanish in circa 1440. Though it is a translation, this edition wrongly attributes Domenico Delfino as being the sole author of this work, and was issued as a work of Delinfo's after his death. It seems that the first edition by Torre was so scarce that it became forgotten, and, ironically, in the 1620s, Francisco de Caceres worked on translating Delfino's work into Spanish. Torre was a Pre-Renaissance Spanish poet. His work was supposedly composed in the Court of Navarra for the Prince of Viana, and was thought to have been a response to two questions raised to Torre by Juan de Beaumont, the question of what is the end of man. The work was considered to be one of the summits of Spanish humanism. His work was also influenced by the Jewish philosophical work 'Guide of the Perplexed&apos. The aim of the work is to be a treatise on human wisdom, and is a summary of many prominent aspects of science, containing chapters focussing on arithmancy, geometry, religion, music, politics, astrology, and many other scientific and academic subjects. The first past deals with liberal arts, metaphysics, and natural science, and the second part looks at moral philosophy. Torre was a bachelor and maybe a Jewish convert. Light cockling to the boards. Small amount of loss to the spine, and bumping to the extremities. Front hinge is starting but firm. Metaphors of Memory : A History of Ideas About the Mind
Cambridge [UK], Cambridge University Press, (2000). orig. boards. xiv,241 pp, 25x18cm,. Textual diagrams. Minor rubbing. Light binding corner bump. VG.
Contents: Introduction; The mystic writing-pad; Memoria: memory as writing; The splendour of the Bologna Stone; A vast labyrinth; A mirror with a memory; Digital memory; Holographic memory; An enchanted loom; The homunculus; Epilogue. "What is memory? It is at the same time ephemeral, unreliable and essential to everything we do. Without memory we lose our sense of identity, reasoning, even our ability to perform simple physical tasks. Yet it is also elusive and difficult to define, and throughout the ages philosophers and psychologists have used metaphors as a way of understanding it. This fascinating book takes the reader on a guided tour of these metaphors of memory from ancient times to the present day. Crossing continents and disciplines, it provides a compelling history of ideas about the mind by exploring the way these metaphors have been used - metaphors often derived from the techniques and instruments developed over the years to store information, ranging from wax tablets and books to photography, computers and even the hologram. Accessible and thought- provoking, this book should be read by anyone who is interested in memory and the mind.

Cognitive Limitations in Aging and Psychopathology
Cambridge, Cambridge University Press, (2005). orig.wrappers. 23x15cm, PAPERBACK.. Minor rubbing. VG.
This book examines the major progress made in recent psychological science in understanding the cognitive control of thought, emotion, and behavior and what happens when that control is diminished as a result of aging, depression, developmental disabilities, or psychopathology. Each chapter of this volume reports the most recent research by a leading researcher on the international stage. Topics include the effects on thought, emotion, and behavior by limitations in working memory, cognitive control, attention, inhibition, and reasoning processes. Other chapters review standard and emerging research paradigms and new findings on limitations in cognitive functioning associated with aging and psychopathology. The explicit goal behind this volume was to facilitate cross-area research and training by familiarizing researchers with paradigms and findings in areas different from but related to their own" - Publisher's description.

Concepts
Clarendon Press, 1998. Paperback. Pp: 174. Oxford Cognitive Science Series General Editors: Martin Davies, Wilde Reader in Mental Philosophy, University of Oxford, UK, James Higginbotham, Professor of General Linguistics, University of Oxford, UK, John O'Keefe, Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience, University College, London, UK, Christopher Peacocke, Waynflete Professor of Metaphysical Philosophy, University of Oxford, UK, and Kim Plunkett, University Lecturer in Psychology, University of Oxford, UK The Oxford Cognitive Science series is a forum for the best contemporary work in this flourishing field, where various disciplines - cognitive psychology, philosophy, linguistics, cognitive neuroscience, and computational theory - join forces in the investigation of thought, awareness, understanding, and associated workings of the mind. Each book will represent an original contribution to its subject, but will be accessible beyond the ranks of specialists, so as to reach a broad interdisciplinary readership. The serieswill be carefully shaped and steered by the general editors, with the aim of representing the most important developments in the field and bringing together its constituent disciplines. About this book The renowned philosopher Jerry Fodor, who has been a leading figure in the study of the mind for more than twenty years, presents a strikingly original theory of the basic constituents of thought. He suggests that the heart of a cognitive science is its theory of concepts, and that cognitive scientists have gone badly wrong in many areas because their assumptions about concepts have been seriously mistaken. Fodor argues compellingly for an atomistic theory of concepts, deals out witty and pugnacious demolitions of the rival theories that have prevailed in recent years, and suggests that future work on human cognition should build upon new foundations. This lively, conversational, and surprisingly accessible book is the first volume in the Oxford Cognitive Science Series, where the best original work in this field will be presented to a broad readership. Concepts will fascinate anyone interested in contemporary work on mind and language. Cognitive science will never be the same again. ISBN: 9780198236368. Cond./Kwaliteit: Goed.
