[4], VIII, 215, [1 blank], 28, [2] pp.Rare fourth (first Puducherry) edition of the first Tamil dictionary, a ground-breaking linguistic work by the missionary Constanzo Beschi (1680-1747), first published at Tranquebar in 1738 and 1742 and at Madras in 1813. References to an 1845 Puducherry edition merely misread the 3 as a 5.The Italian Costanzo (Constant) Giuseppe Beschi, also known by his Tamil name, Viramamunivar, was a Jesuit missionary in South India. Having acquired a great mastery of the Tamil language, and written popular works in the language, he is sometimes regarded as the father of modern Tamil literature. He published 23 works in Tamil. The present dictionary translates the every-day "low" Tamil language used by the common people. The main work is followed by a 28-page compendium.Small bookplate in Tamil on the front paste-down, stamp on the back of the title-page. Inscription in ink on back paste-down, dated from Rome, 14 December 1947. Some spotting throughout. Top of spine slightly damaged, covers slightly rubbed. Otherwise in good condition.l Bibl. ¶ Respectively last and penultimate edition of Beza's famous tracts on polygamy and divorce. In the late 1560s, Beza decided to focus his biblical studies on a close examination of some problems in marriage law, which resulted in his tract on polygamy, in large part a polemic against the Italian reformer Bernardino Ochino (1487-1564), and his tract on annulment and divorce, an extended analysis of arguments for ending marriages in the expectation that they would be followed by remarriages. BIGNE , MARGAURIN DE LA
Sacra Bibliothecae Sanctorum Patrum supra Ducentos, qua Continentur , Illorum de Rebus, Divinis Opera Omnia et Fragmenta...in Tomos octo.
Paris, Michaelem Sonnium, 1575 - 1576. Paris, Michaelem Sonnium, 1575 - 1576. 9 volumes bound in three, thick folio, printed in double column with woodcut initials. FIRST EDITION, [some volumes with 1576 date on title, perhaps denoting a second issue], with the ninth index volume bound at the end, but without the appendix volume published later in 1579. ' It contains the writing, some complete, some fragmentary, of our two hundred Fathers, many published for the first time. Particular care was given to the elucidation of texts corrupted by heretics. This work was the pioneer in the field of critical patristics.' The work was enlarged in the second edition printed in Paris in 1589, though certain texts were removed from that edition on the insistence of the Church who regarded La Bigne's work with great suspicion. The work passed through several further editions in the 17th Century, the last of 1677 being in 27 volumes. This work is a monument to Humanist patristic scholarship. Ed.: ed.. Vol.: 3 vols Binding: contemporary calf, worn and slightly chipped , finely restored spines, some restorations on covers, some worming of surface leather, internally with only minor faults, in generally good clean condition throughout. Blindstamped titles on spines.

[32], 160, [1], [1 blank] pp.Third revised edition of Blondel's famous work on the composition and medicinal values of the sulphur springs in Aachen and Burtscheid. The Flemish doctor François Blondel (1613-1703), whose full-page engraved portrait is inserted after the table of contents, devoted his life to the promotion of the medicinal qualities of these springs. Since Roman times, the springs were known to provide relief against rheumatism, gout and scrofulous disorders. Blondel became inspector of the springs in 1666 and instituted a drinking course of the mineral water. Blondel's promotion of the springs also provided the city of Aachen, which suffered a major fire in 1656, with an important source of income.Blondel first published the first edition in 1671, the second in 1685 and the present third enlarged edition appeared in 1688. It includes recommendations from Dutch and German doctors, signed 1687 and 1688. It was translated into German and Dutch. In good condition with only a few small stains. Binding slightly rubbed and spine damaged (lacking most of the backstrip). Contemporary sheepskin parchment.
8, [8], “288” [= 284], [16] pp. plus 2 folding ll.Rare first edition, in the original Latin, complete with the folding hierarchical tables (often lacking), of a comprehensive account of precious stones and their origin, cutting and tooling, use and properties, along with other stones and crystals, as well as things we would not now call stones, including coral, fossils and shells. "By far the most thorough and complete up to date, easily surpasses [all earlier works] in quantity and quality of information; ... further distinguished by its intimate knowledge of the art of the lapidary ... an impressive work by any standard" (Sinkankas). It is the first attempt to systematically describe minerals, "in many respects the most important lapidary of the seventeenth century and exerted a widespread influence" (Adams). The illustrations show equipment, the stones themselves (including several fossil teeth), and a few diagrams. Boodt was physician to the emperor Rudolph II in Prague and also acted as his advisor in all matters relating to gems and precious stones. With an early owner's name(?)stamped below the end of the text: "Cernaza". Browned throughout (as usual) and with worm holes (primarily in the title-page and the margins of the first four and last four leaves), the title page also with further damage, repaired by backing the title-page with modern wove paper, a tear repaired in one other leaf and in one folding table, and an occasional stain. These defects cause no loss of text or illustrations and the book has generous margins. The boards and endleaves show additional worm holes (fairly extensive at the front) and the binding is somewhat soiled, but it remains structurally sound. Rare first edition of a landmark lapidary.l Adams, Birth and development of the geological sciences, pp. 162-163; Bibl. [16], 422 [= 434], [20] pp.Rare first and only edition of a well-illustrated handbook on medicinal uses of animals and animal products, by Willem vanden Bossche in Dendermonde (East Flanders). The wild and domesticated animals are arranged in four sections: birds and other winged animals (pp. 1-140, including a bat, eagle, falcon, vulture, owls, swan, goose, peacock, pheasant and parrot), mammalian quadrupeds (pp. 141-318, including a camel, horse, lion, elephant and macaque(?)), fish and other marine animals, edible and inedible (pp. 319-386, including an eel, sea urchin, turtle, crustaceans, snails, frogs, otter and beaver), and insects, arthropods, reptiles, worms, etc. (pp. 387-434, including a spider, lizard, lice, scorpions, snakes, leeches and worms). The lice are shown with their host scratching his head and the leeches in use for bloodletting on a woman’s arm. The beaver looks rather like a wolf with a fish body for a tail. The woodcut of a hedgehog is reused to illustrate the sea urchin! Bossche gives a description of each animal, quoting sources from antiquity to the seventeenth century, and then discusses its medical uses. Only four of the woodcuts are signed, all with the initials “ICI”, identified as the Antwerp woodblock cutter Jan Christoffel Jeghers (1618-1666/67), son of the woodblock cutter Christoffel Jeghers (1596-1652/53) who worked in Rubens’s shop in 1630 and continued to work closely with Rubens to his death in 1640. With the bookplate of the Gouda pharmacist Elize Grendel (1899-1986) on the first blank. A few leaves slightly loosening, slightly browned and some foxing, otherwise good. Eye-catching, beautifully coloured facsimile wall-map of Georg Marcgraf's renowned mid-17th-century map of Dutch Brazil. The present wall-map was published alongside the 1923 facsimile edition of Caspar Barlaeus' Nederlandsch Brazilië onder het bewind van Johan Maurits Grave van Nassau 1637-1644, edited by S.P. l'Honoré Naber and published by Martinus Nijhoff in The Hague."As a whole, the Marcgraf map is an extremely valuable iconographic source for aspects of Dutch Brazil, especially for ethnography. As can be seen from Post's paintings and drawings, he had a superb talent for compressing details into small scenes and even smaller figures and his eye for detail was extraordinary. It seems very probable that the scenes depicted were actually observed and although redrawn and recombined afterwards, they can be trusted as authentic records of negro, Tupinamba and Tapuya life at this time." (Whitehead & Boeseman p. 159).The large wall-map consists of eleven irregular shaped leaves pasted together to make a rectangle, supplemented with a descriptive text in Dutch about the Dutch possessions in Brazil and its governor-general Johan Maurits van Nassau-Siegen, nicknamed "the Brazilian". The text is a Dutch translation, probably by l'Honoré Naber, from the original Latin by Barlaeus. "Four of the parts, the actual maps, were published by Barlaeus, being those of Sergipe, southern Pernambuco, northern Pernambuco with Itamaracá, and Paraiba with Rio Grande. Georg Marcgraf (also Markgraf or Marggraf, 1610-1644) was a German naturalist, astronomer and cartographer, who is known for his works on 17th-century Brazil. His large map of (Dutch) Brazil is renowned for its accuracy and precision. The Historia naturalis Brasiliae, published posthumously, was a major contribution to early modern science, which came about as a result of Marcgraf's zoological, botanical, astronomical, and geographical expeditions in Brazil. In very good condition.
