[8], 189[=205], [1 blank] pp.First edition of a famous work on optics by the English natural philosopher and mathematician Roger Bacon (ca. 1220-ca. 1292). Bacon was well read in Arabic and ancient Greek sources on optics and perspective, a subject hardly studied in Europe during the earlier Middle Ages. The main sources for his theories were the writings of Euclid, Ptolemy and Alhazen (Ibn al-Haytham), and he followed Robert Grosseteste concerning the importance of light and in his emphasis on the use of lenses, not only for burning, but also for magnification to aid natural vision. Bacon advised magnifying glasses for old people as well as for people with weak eyes. The Perspectiva belonged to Bacon's Opus maius, compiled in manuscript in 1266-1267. The present edition was based on a medieval manuscript and was edited by Johann Combach (1585-1651), professor of philosophy at Marburg in GermanyWith a stain on the title-page and two on the last blank, probably from removing old stamps, browned throughout with a few small spots, but overall in good condition. Binding with some water stains, but otherwise good.l DSB I, pp. 377-384; VD17 23:236968W; cf. Kemp, The science of art, pp. 26, 211, and 269; Vagnetti DB5.

[14], 76, [2 blank] pp.First edition of a beautifully illustrated baroque Dutch Royal Entree book, with all of the plates in either early or first states, before numbers and letters. Published simultaneously in French and in Latin, it is the first official description of an entrance in the Northern Netherlands, a tradition which had flown over from the South. Maria de Medici, born at Florence in 1573, married the French King Henry IV and after his death she became Regent of Louis XIII. But when Louis XIII came of age and claimed his throne Maria de Medici was exiled and fled the court. The splendid ceremonial entrance of the queen-mother of France in 1638 was an important moment in the history of Amsterdam. She had already been in the Southern Netherlands, where she was received with great marks of honour as well. Her royal presence in the Netherlands though was of great political susceptibility, and actually the Dutch government tried to get rid of Maria as soon as possible. She died at Cologne in 1642. The beautiful plates are in two, quite different, styles. Nine plates are engraved by Nolpe after Moeyaert, depicting allegorical subjects from the queen's life. The remaining plates, engraved by Saverij, represent the festivals and are remarkable for the detailed views, with 3 plates after the renowned painter Simon de Vlieger etched in the best style of Dutch landscape scenes. The plates are here bound together, following the text. The plates are:Portrait of Maria de Medici, with Amsterdam in the background, engraved by Salomon Saverij after a painting by Honthorst, second stateArrival in the Haarlemmermeer, engraved by Salomon Saverij after J. Martsen de Jonge, first stateCavalcade entering the triumphal arch at the Dam, engraved by Salomon Saverij after J. [12], 130, 12, [2], 16 pp.The first edition of the famous and influential Pharmacopoeia Bateana a nationally as well as internationally authoritative pharmacology consisting of the medical recipes and prescriptions collected by the British physician George Bate (1608-1668). Bate had been personal physician to Charles I, Oliver Cromwell and Charles II, had been one of the founding Fellows of the Royal Society and had published several medical and political articles and books including two volumes of Elenchus Motuum Nuperorum in Anglia. He had been so highly regarded that his papers were collected and published 19 years after his death by James Shipton as Bate’s Dispensatory (title of the English translation, published in the same year). The book, generally known as the Pharmacopoeia Bateana lived to see many editions in Latin, as well as in English and Dutch and was used as a book of reference until the end of the 18th century. It contains recipe's, their names, compositions, preparations, virtues, uses, and doses, as they are applicable to the whole practice of physick and chirurgery.Several other pharmacological texts are included: (1) "Orthotonia medicorum observata", on the right spelling of ingredients, in alphabetical order, and (2) the "Tabula Posologica", a table for regulation the doses of different medicines. With the bookplate of E. Grendel on the first endpaper. Some smalls stains on the boards, binding slightly rubbed, otherwise in good condition.l Hirsch II, p. 780.
