Pp. 22 with Japanese text and 122 plates with woodcut images, all printed in bright, fresh colours some heightened with silver or gold. Double page leaves folded in the Japanese fashion. Publisher's decorated paper covers, title labels, some staining along the edges. Housed in original brown cloth slip case, somewhat worn. First edition of this monumental and fascinating work devoted to traditional Japanese toys and antique folk crafts.The illustrator is Kawasaki Koysen (1877-1942) who worked during the Meiji and Showa periods specializing in pictures of traditional Japanese toys and antique folk crafts, also including good-luck charms which he found during his travels around Japan. During his career he produced 52 Gangucho sketchbooks containing about 5000 different images. A rare and impressive work in very good condition.
