Bookplate (Carl Gedvard Bonde, Ericsberg). First edition in bookform of a narrative of the first Swedish circumnavigation in the frigate Eugenie. Originally published as articles in the Stockholm newspaper "Aftonbladet" Dec. 1851 - July 1853. First editions except part one which is in third edition. Contemporary half calf on papercovered boards, rebacked with the original back preserved, rubbed. Bookplate. Light foxing to endpapers. A small hole on title page with loss of one letter. Comprises: Parts 1-5 devoted to Australia; part 6 to Mauritius and parts 7-10 to South Africa. Backhouse was a Quaker missionary who lived in South Africa during the years 1838-41. Ferguson 2434-7 & 2703-4.

The coloured plates depict views from Buenos Aires, Lima, San Francisco, Guayaquil, Tahiti and Honolulu, some of inhabitants from Tonga, Hawaii, Tahiti and Niue (Savage Island), and a Chinese theatre. The British East India's frigate Cabalva under command of Captain Dalrymple left Gravesand in April 1818 to go to China but was shipwrecked near to Mauritius. This account by one of the officers vividly describes the disaster and the fortunate landing at Port Louis for the survivors.
