Some minor stain to title and last few leaves, otherwise good.First edition of this important early work on Makassar, now the capital of the Indonesian province of South Sulawesi. Makassar was already the dominant trading centre in the eastern part of the East Indian archipelago when the Portuguese arrived in the 16th century. Later the Dutch arrived, built a trading post in 1607, and replaced the Portuguese as colonial masters in 1667. This account describes the natural history, manners and customs of the inhabitants, government, religion, ceremonies, etc. Gervaise was a French missionary who lived in Siam for some years. The beautiful illustrations depict impressive costumes, grand views (including two folding panoramas of Moscow and Isfahan), interesting flora and fauna, animals, monuments, antiquities, etc. Contemporary full calf, expertly restored, original spine preserved, covers ruled in gilt and spine richly decorated and lettered in gilt, marbled edges. First French edition, translated from the original Dutch published in 1714.Cornelis De Brujn born at the Hague in 1652 was a Dutch painter and traveller. He made his first journey in 1674 to the Levant where he stayed for seven years. This work is devoted to his second journey which took him to Russia, Persia, India, Ceylon and Indonesia. His account is devoted to the countries visited, their peoples and customs, culture and natural history. It is mainly recognised for the lovely illustrations made after his drawings. He visited the Samoyedic country, Moscow, Astrakhan, Siberia, Isfahan, Persepolis, Garmeroon, Cochin in India, and Batavia and Bantam in Indonesia. Of particular interest is De Brujn's description of the Samoyedic people, one of the earliest, and the account with illustrations of Persepolis. The Indonesian region of Aceh was the most wealthy, powerful and cultivated state in the Malacca Straits region in the early seventeenth century. By the early nineteenth century Aceh had become an increasingly influential power due to its strategic location for controlling regional trade. The Aceh War between the Dutch and Muslim Sultanate of Aceh lasted for over 30 years (1873-1904) until the Dutch finally were able to put down the uprising. Snouck Hurgronje (1857-1936) was the leading Dutch expert on Islam at this time and advisor of Native Affairs to the colonial government of the Netherlands East Indies. Houbraken (dated 1745 and not always present). Modern vellum. Occasionally some light marginal staining. Old inscription on front end paper. First edition of this historical and topographical poem about Batavia. Jan de Marre (1696-1763) was a seaman at the Dutch East India Company (VOC) for a long period in the beginning of the 18th century. He was the Commander of a VOC ship to the East Indies in 1731 and visited Batavia at this time. A year later he retired from the Company and moved on to a career of writing and theatre directing. Landwehr, VOC, 1547. Provenance: This copy was given by Hendrik Johannes Bool (1828-98), Dutch officer and politician, to Aristide Marre (1823-1918), a renowned linguist and specialist in classical Malay and Malagasy. He succeeded Pierre Favre at the School of Oriental languages in Paris.

William Marsden (1754-1836) British historian, linguist, numismatist and pioneer of the scientific study of Indonesia. For eight years he resided in Bencoolen (Bangkhulu) in Sumatra where he studied the language and people. Back in England he was encouraged by Sir Joseph Banks and others of the Royal Society to prepare his collected material for publication. His comprehensive work "History of Sumatra" appeared in 1783 and in 1812 he published this grammar and also a dictionary of the Malay language, which form the basis of all subsequent Sumatran linguistics.
