Old ownership signature on front paste downs. First edition.Fredrika Bremer (1891-65) was a famous Swedish novelist and influential feminist of her time. She received a gold medal from the Swedish Academy. This work is devoted to her travels in America between 1850 and 1851. Bremer wanted to study American society in general and women's conditions in particular. She travelled to the north to visit the Indians and to the south along the Mississippi to meet slave-owners. She also visited Quakers, Swedish settlements, prisoners, slum quarters of New York, etc. She met with Washington Irving, Lowell, Hawthorne, Emerson and other American literary colleagues. Clark considered her account to be one of the most important travel books by a foreigner of this period. This work was published in English in the same year, translated by Mary Howitt. A narrative of a Swedish expedition to North America and the West Indies to protect Swedish trading ships during the American Civil War. Govenius was the shipÕs minister on the voyage. He stayed in Boston with Swedish Americans where he very much enjoyed the theatrical and musical atmosphere. ÒExellent chapters on Boston and on American women and family lifeÓ (Larson). Samuel Hearne was the first white man to reach the Arctic Ocean overland. His manuscript was found by the French navigator La Perouse when he captured Fort Albany, Hudson's Bay, in 1782-82. Contemporary half calf, spines ruled in gilt and with red title labels, rubbed. Volume three's spine ends expertly restored. Old ownership signatures on titles. Scarce first edition of this early Swedish valuable account on American natural history. Pehr Kalm (1716-79), Finnish - Swedish botanist and economist, was sent by Linné to North America between 1748-51 to study the flora and collect specimens of plants and seeds to bring back to Sweden. Unfortunately many of the seeds and plants died on the way home. His narrative comprises the stay in England, the Atlantic voyage, the visits to Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Oregon and also his travels within Canada (to Montreal, Quebec and Lorette). Streeter ii, 823: "One of the most important and reliable 18th century accounts of Amercian natural history, social organization, and political situation". A fourth part written in 1777 was never published. The manuscript and his diaries were kept at the Academy of Åbo but destroyed during a fire in 1927. He visited south Colorado and became fascinated by the ruins of the cliff dwellers of Mesa Verde. Olof Torén (1718-53) was chaplain on the East India voyage via Surat in India to China. He sent letters to Linné together with samples of seeds and plants he had found along the route.
