[COSTUMES FOR "WALZER AUS WIEN" / THEATERKUNST HERMANN J. KAUFMANN].
[A collection of 26 water colour drawings depicting costumes for the pasticcio "Walzer aud Wien"]. About 1930-6.
Comprises 26 plates (26 x 22 cm) with 31 costume drawings painted in water colours with notes and numbers in pencil. The notes refer to the operetta characters and possibly Swedish artists who were famous at that time. A label "Theaterkunst Hermann J. Kaufmann" pasted on the reverse of the plates. Housed in a specially-made box. The pasticcio "Walzer aus Wien" arranged by Erich Wolfgang Korngold and with music by Johann Strauss (father and son) was first performed at the Vienna Stadttheater in 1930. The following year it was restaged in London as "Waltzes from Vienna" and a French version entitled "Valses de Vienne" was produced in Paris. The successful operetta was based on the rivalry between Strauss the elder and Strauss the younger. We have not been able to find any Swedish performance but this set of drawings listing Swedish artists indicates that such a plan existed, even if it was never implemented. We don't know who made the drawings but the Kaufmann labels suggest that they used to belong to them. Theaterkunst Hermann Kaufmann, founded in Berlin 1907, became the world's biggest costume house for theatre, opera, and later also film productions. In the 1930s the company expanded internationally but in 1936 Hermann Kaufmann had to sell it due to political pressure.

Crinoline, its Difficulties and Dangers. A Series of Twenty Illustrations from Nature, by "Quiz". Dedicated to the Ladies, by the Publishers. London, Read & Co., Johnson's Court, Fleet Street, no date (about 1850-60).
A striking folded panorama with twenty comic hand coloured lithograph illustrations. Tear to first fold (no loss). As issued in original cloth with blue pictorial label to front cover, very lightly rubbed. Size: 15,5 x 13,3 cm. This is a satirical work about the problems of wearing crinolines. [LIBERTY - FASHION SALES CATALOGUE].
Dress and Decoration. London & Paris, published by Liberty & Co., no date but about 1905.
Folio. Pp. (32). With thirteen large tipped-in colour plates, including eleven of ladies in elaborate dresses and two smaller plates of children's clothing. As issued, stapled, with some rust at inner margin of first few leaves. Original floral decorated green boards by Atelier Devauchelle, title label on upper cover. First and only edition of this glamorous catalogue by the prominent Liberty company. Including plates with women in fashionable dresses set against backgrounds of sophisticated Arts & Crafts interiors. Each design with a detailed description. Foreword by Arthur Fish, renowned British art specialist. Arthur Lasenby Liberty (1843-1917) opened the first shop "The East India House" in 1875 on Regent street in London and sold many items from the Orient including fabrics. Within a few years the oriental fabrics became very popular and to meet the increasing demand the shop (now named Liberty) started to import un-dyed silk, cashmere and cotton fabrics, which were then hand-printed in England, in Eastern style. In 1884, Liberty established a costume department, in which clothing was designed and made from Liberty fabrics. The goal was not to make clothing that followed fashion; it was to make clothing based on historical costume, reinterpreted for the modern wearer as part of the Aesthetic Movement. Liberty was one of the first to embrace the new Art Nouveau style in the mid 1890s. They became known for their textiles in this style, some of which are still produced today (Vintage Fashion Guild).

Meubles - Referenzen. Saison 1903/1904. [A customer book with original upholstery patterns painted in gouache]. Germany 1903-4.
A folder comprising 51 mounted plates with original designs for wall paper or furniture fabrics executed in lavish gouache colours, all in typical Jugend style. The motifs are clearly inspired by natural forms and structures, particularly the curved lines of flowers and plants. The pattern sizes vary from 30-36 cm x 38-53 cm. Bound in original half cloth boards, spine with some damage, paper label titled "Meubles Referenzen. Saison 1903/1904" pasted on upper cover. We assume that this unique design catalogue was used by a furniture store or upholsterer who provided products made to order. The beautiful colourful patterns are preserved in an exceptional condition. An impressive and very rare survival of a customer book of this kind.

GOSHÓKAI (TAKAHASHI, TÏJIRÏ) (ED.):, [KIMONO DESIGNS]. Hatsune . Kyoto, Unsôdô, Meiji 39 (1906).
GOSHÓKAI (TAKAHASHI, TÏJIRÏ) (ED.):
[KIMONO DESIGNS]. Hatsune . Kyoto, Unsôdô, Meiji 39 (1906).
An album with thirty wonderful textile designs for "kosode" (short-sleeved kimono), woodblock-printed in vivid colours, some highlighted with metallic inks, protected by tissue guards. Pp. 17 leaves including title and colophon. Size: 31.2 x 21.8 cm. Original boards, worn, cotton ties, floral paper paste-downs. Hand written title slip "Hatsune" on front cover. According to the title and preface it seems that the designs were intended for kimono to be made for the beginning of spring. The lovely and colourful designs are mainly influenced by nature, including images of flowers, trees, birds, butterflies, etc. We believe it was made as a customer catalogue at a kimono store in Kyoto. It was published by the famous publishing house Unsd but we haven't been able to find any information about the editor Goshkai. A rare work, with no copies in OCLC or the Japanese database. Unsd published another book titled "Hatsune" in 1924 which is a completely different work. Small Japanese ownership stamps to upper margins. Thumbing and some marks to lower margin, but overall in good condition.
