16mo. Pp. 43, (1). With decorated coloured title, eight full-page coloured plates and two text illustrations. Publisher's pictorial red boards, cloth spine, slightly rubbed. Decorated coloured endpapers. First rare edition of this charming children's book illustrated in Lesznai's unique Hungarian Art Nouveau style. Anna Lesznai (Amlia J. Moskowitz) was born in Budapest in 1885. She became one of the most prominent Hungarian poets of the 20th century, as well as a celebrated painter, graphic artist and designer. She was a key figure in the Hungarian avant-garde, a member of the art movement "The Eight" (A Nyolcak). Her painting and embroideries drew much of their inspiration from Hungarian folklore and folk art. In 1939 she emigrated to the United States where she continued her work in art education and opened her own school of painting. She died in New York City in 1966. (This work is printed by the Kner Publishing House as a series of three children's books in the same format, of which one is "Testvrorszg" by Bla Balzs).

Koronghi Lippich, Elek Költeményei. 1880-1902. Kriesch Aladâr és Nagy Sândor Rajzaival. [Budapest], Pallas, 1903.
Small 4to. Size: 17.5 x 21 cm. Pp. 307, (1). With numerous illustrations and text printed within decorated borders in various colours. Publisher's pictorial burgundy cloth, upper cover and spine printed in gilt, lightly rubbed. Floral endpapers. Old ownership stamp. First edition of this early and scarce Hungarian Art Nouveau illustrated book of poems. Koronghi Lippich (1862-1924) was an early propagator of Art Nouveau as well as the Arts and Crafts movement in Hungary as the head of the Fine Arts Department at the Ministry of Education and Religion. The two illustrators of this work, Sndor Nagy and Aladr (Krsfi-) Kriesch, were the founders of the art colony at Gdll, the cradle of Hungarian Art Nouveau. Together with Lippich they shared the interest in the Transylvanian art, and used it to form the unique Hungarian style in modern art, of which this is a beautiful example.
